Arvo Pärt - Arbos

The usually very digestible Pärt brought in a more edgy way.
The Hilliard Ensemble and the Brass Ensemble Staatsorchester Stuttgart do a fine job.

Default Ramirez: Misa Criolla

One of the first recommendations by Julian on this excellent thread...

Ramirez, A:
Misa Criolla
Navidad en Verano
Navidad Nuestra
José Carreras (tenor)
Coral Salvé de Laredo, Sociedad Coral de Bilbao, José Luis Ocejo, Damián Sanchez

It's nice to hear music in my own language and this disc takes me back to my childhood when I used to go to church with my parents. Of course, we did not have such musical talent or harpsichords in our church. The recording, done in a church in Cantabria, Spain, is excellent.

Here is some background on this music:
Quote:
In 1963 the Argentinian composer Ariel Ramirez wrote a Mass based on South American popular melodies. The hugely popular 'Misa Criolla' included the five major parts of the Catholic liturgy (Kyrie, Credo, Gloria, Sanctus and Agnus Dei) but also instruments from the Andes folk idiom.

Default Sound The Trumpet: Alison Balsom

Wrapping things up today...

Sound The Trumpet: Alison Balsom with The English Concert, Trevor Pinnock

...with baroque music that is nicely played and recorded. Plus Ms. Balsom is gorgeous .

Gramophone says
Quote:
when the instrument is played as fluidly agreeably as it is here, nobody could doubt that it is the right tool for the job...And it all works. This is rattling good music, and so easily does the trumpet fit into it that often it is hard to recall what the original scorings were anyway. Balsom, too, sounds utterly at home...and [is] wonderfully backed by the English Concert and the bright natural musicianship of Trevor Pinnock.

Bach - Die Kunst der Fuge
Emerson String Quartet

An acquired taste.
This is complex music that gives you new information with each listening session.

Thanks so much; I really like this record a lot! I played violin in a small orchestra long ago with Håkan Hardenberger as soloist, very nice experience back then...

She is an amazing talent...ever heard her live performance of Astor Piazzola's LIBERTANGO? You won't believe your ears! There are several YouTube videos of the concert out there.

As for the visuals,....well: !!!

Yes...otherwise known as the most insane find ever (for me)....luckily the guy was not a fan of the latest over-pricing of this set on Ebay and the like and parted with it for a small profit. Could not believe the luck involved... There are reviews of this set compared against the best vinyl and they swear this set beats the mastering job on vinyl releases. We'll see...[emoji4]

Check this out...September 19th, live Mahler 5, NY Phil under van Zweden who not only knows his way around Bruckner and Brahms quite well but obviously Mahler as well.

As a key comment,....Chris Martin (former principal Atlanta, then Chicago and now the NY Phil) is simply not human in his mastery of the instrument! Clearly ranks up there with the absolute best in world history on the horn IMHO!
