Bill Evans Trio XRCD
I received "everybody digs bill evans" in xrcd as a gift. Normally, I've found the XRCD to be very well mastered and a joy to listen to. This one is a bit disappointing.
It seems to be recorded at a very soft level. I've got to dial up to about 50 to obtain any impact at all. The top octaves of the piano are very scratchy, distorted and rolled off. Middle octaves are smeared and lack definition. There are some very nice tunes on this CD and could be quite enjoyable if not for the above faults. I even vacuumed my panels to see if I had some dust on them to no avail. I'm guessing that since this was originally recorded in 59-60 time-frame that the limitations or degradation of the master tape may have an influence on the outcome regardless of the XRCD process. Curious if anyone else has this CD and have experienced anything like I describe. Gordon |

I read your post and immediately grabbed my XRCD of this CD -- it is a bit low on the recorded level; however, it displays none of the characteristics you encountered. I pushed mine to 55 on the C500 and is quite loud, very detailed, crisp & non-distorted.
For overall enjoyment, low 40's on the C500 is plenty loud in my room (15 1/2' wide back wall X 20' room) The matrix info on the copy I have, follows: JVCXR-0020-2 2T V IFPI L236 IFPI 4911 A replacement is definitely in order. Bob

Thanks for the input Bob. I grabbed my copy to compare numbers. Where exactly did you locate at those? I could find the JVCXR-0020-2 but no others. A new copy will be requested Monday morning based on what you mention.
By the way, do you have "duke's big 4" by the Duke Ellington Quartet? Very nicely done. Gordon |

I also just thought of this -- if there is no other data there -- and depending on where you or the purchaser bought the disc, it's possible you have a counterfit -- many on FleaBay (coming out of China).
Do you know where it was purchased from?? If from MD, ED, AS -- then it's legit copy.

I was able to locate the numbers as you recommeded and they match so I doubt it is a counterfiet. My wife said she got if from Amazon. I normally buy them from Elusive Disc. We'll contact Amazon to do an exchange. The XRCD is such a great copy it is a shame to get a bad one.
I highly recommend dukes big 4. I've listened to it 3 times in the past couple days and the detail is stunning! Gordon |

I got a vinyl copy of "Everybody Dig Bill Evans" for Christmas. It sounds great, really a nice recording, especially the drum sounds. It is on a label I've never heard of, Jazz Wax Productions, DMM, 180 gram vinyl. I'll have to get the XRCD to compare!

I exchanged this CD and am still disappointed. While most of it cleaned up, there are spots where the piano is terribly smeared and scratchy.
Thinking it may be a speaker, I swapped left and right and got the same result. Track 4 is the worst. There are a few measures that are just terrible. This is an isolated problem and not the end of the world. Just thought I'd do an update. Gordon |
