As far as integration goes all subs have a characteristic "sound", just like any other speaker. I learned that the strength of a Krell MRS was the quality not quantity of its bass output, a fact one would never discover unless you own the kind of low bass/subsonic material I have amassed over the years. In actuality a Krell MRS is a very very fine articulate powerful
woofer, not really a subwoofer, IMO. It matches or comes close to matching the
quality of Thor bass but if I walked in the room I would be able to immediately discern the two. Ported bass is simply different than sealed bass. And then even ported bass differs in "sound" between even the finest of companies. That's the true
ultimate problem you run into when trying to match say a SF Aida to a generic sub in an ultimate highend system to obtain that elusive subsonic extension every audiophile secretly craves. Yet with the MAXX/Thor/WC combo you can absolutely have your cake and eat it to because Dave Wilson has voiced the Thor to
precisely match the MAXX/Alexandria "sound" in the bass. The tremendous advantage of Gary Protein's system is that his Infinity IRS V's achieve an integration between the subwoofers and midrange panels that can never be achieved in aftermarket configurations, except with the MAXX/Thor/WC combo which is the one exception.
The implications of being able to achieve this type of truly seamless integration is far reaching. But I will not further explore them unless there is interest.
