Thanks everyone. I don't want to insult Wilson Audio owners/fans, but do they normally sound hollow and distant? I've read so many rave reviews about them, so I finally heard a pair of Sabrinas driven by an Ayre integrated at Music Lovers Audio in Berkeley a few days ago. (I was curious to see if they sounded enough better than my DALIs to consider upgrading.) Well, to my ears and my friend's who went with me, they sounded awful! As I said, very hollow as if the mids were scooped out, and the music seemed to come from the very back of the enclosure. I wouldn't pay $16 for that sound, much less $16k!! We then got to wondering if the salesman, in his haste to connect them, hooked them out of phase or something. I didn't want to embarrass him by asking, but perhaps I should have. The next day my friend brought over one of the same recordings ("Take 5" by Dave Brubeck), and we were stunned at how much better it sounded on my system: the musicians were in the same room, not in an adjacent building! Anyway, just curious if that is the normal "house" Wilson sound.

Obviously something was wrong with the setup. There's nothing hollow about the Wilson sound.

I'm not a Wilson guy but I spent some time demo'ing the Sabrinas at Defjnitive Audio in Seattle about a month ago and they sounded very good. They definitely did not sound hollowed out at all and the soundstage and imaging were good.

Yeah, there must have been something wrong, as no one would buy them sounding like that! It's hard to imagine that the salesman didn't notice, though.

Something was certainly wrong. While Wilsons are not everyone's cup of tea, the house sound is certainly not "broken."
