Is hi-end audio the only product where companies try to make up for the lack of volume by charging outrageous prices to sell a couple of units??

Accuphase prices are not that outrageous at home. Their previous top of the line preamp, the C2810 was about US$10k which is way below Mcintosh's. Their top one box cdp, the DP700 which I used to own was US$9k.

Of course once Axiss Audio has got their grubby mits on it, the 9k becomes 26k which is ridiculous.

The new C3800 will be about the same price as a two box version of the C1000 I believe.
