Well, what can I say.. I’m very impressed and happy, considering it’s not even broken in. I’m streaming Tidal via my Bel Canto Stream to the Yggy and onto my C2300. I had been using the same setup via the DAC in my MCD1100 and almost immediately I could hear the difference. Looking forward to hearing the improvement with more hours on the Yggy, new XLR’s and power cord.

*Thanks again to Dan and his amazingly insightful and helpful reviews.

This is a review of the 1987 California Audio Labs Tempest CD player. Mike Moffett of Schitt Audio designed it. It cost 2 grand 32 years ago. I still have it boxed up in a storage locker.

I also still have the California Audio Labs Alpha DAC boxed up. On the secondary market when one shows up it doesn't last long.

Thanks, JBT. A cool review and the repeated references to CD quality sound are a great reminder that not all were wowed by digital sound in the 80s. I was not an audiophile in the 80s (or at least it never occurred to me to read Stereophile et al). But I did buy a CD player in 1985, and then return it in puzzlement and frustration just a couple of days later. Sadly, I had to eat the loss on the 5 or 6 CDs I bought with it.

Back in the day the Meridian really was one of the smoothest CDPs out there. No wonder anyone used to the sound of the Meridian would find just about anything else forward and bright sounding. I know, I had two Meridian CDPs back in those days and they spoiled me with their rich and laid back presentation.

Jacob.......Well, you've had your new Yggdrasil DAC for over a month now. I'm guessing you've managed to log plenty of break-in time. What do you think now?

Dan,

It’s definitely improved! Out of the box, listening to Tidal, the sound was a little thin, tinney. It’s much warmer now, mellow. But what’s been really interesting, compared to my MCD1100 dac, is I’ve notice more clarity between individual instruments. Before they were muddled, everything kind of ran together, now you can clearly hear them. The Yggy has been well worth the upgrade.

Thank you.

Ive read this thread more than once.

Im close to pulling the trigger on yggy.

The USB on the yggy has been updated since this thread was active. What is the general consensus of the best input? I have a self built PC that Im using HDMI out to my mx121. I mostly listen to streaming from youtube music or google play. I know I could do better here but the family package is nice and convenient. We use it to stream movies too. Im trying to keep it simple as I need my teenage son to run this system when Im not around.

So should I run usb to the yggy? Or consider some electronic box between the pc and the yggy in order to clean up the usb or to convert to a other input such as AES or coax?

Thanks
jc
