MPS, I wonder whether you have the time and inclination to indulge me in an experiment and hook the CLX's to the 16 Ohm taps on your VT200's.I would be most interested in your thoughts and considerations in respect of this particular combination, which does fly in the face of Convention somewhat!

Yes, I did try all combinations of output taps. 1-2-4-8-16 ohms.
Differences from one tap to the next one are small but obvious. Generally lowest transformer ratio gives the most open sound, in this case that would be 16 ohms. This output had the best midrange, like vocals and some acoustic instruments also stereo imaging was excellent. What was missing was something in frequency extremes, lack of clearness and control.
For me the best compromise is 8 ohm taps, still excellent in midrange and better balanced through out frequencies. Going to 4 ohms gives greater control with less sweetness and 3D space but still good choice for electronic and highly processed studio music.
Basically any transformer output tube amplifier would prefer easy load, such as high impedance and high effiency horn speakers and then a sub 10W SET could be the solution.
Point is to choose correct output to match your speaker and your preference.

Indeed, For my part, I have with judicious tweakiery to the valve set of the REF5se , together with the use of Stillpoints Managed to 'tune' my system to the 16 Ohm tap with very little compromise in the frequency extremes whilst maximising all of the positive aspects, that you mention, with that particular combination.

Unfortunatly, My predilection for the 16Ohm ratio sound , Is in the main, the cause of some angst ATM as I am currently running with a loaner GS150 (note thread elsewhere) and whilst I can we'll see the GS, with the required break in time on the clock, Outperforming my REF150 on the 8 Ohm tap, yet preventing me from serious consideration due to the lack of an option for 16Ohm operation with the new model

Hi Harlequen

if you dont mind me asking which stillpoints did you use on the REF5SE ? how many pieces and did you use the threads ?

Would be curious what effects/improvements, the stillpoints has on the REF5se ?

thanks
