I used a piece of smoked glass on top of a subwoofer many years ago. It looked great on the walnut speaker. I got it from a local glass (automotive and buildings) shop and it did not cost too much. I know it was tempered and the edges were polished. I think they had to order it since it is tempered glass and had to be cut before being tempered.

Anyway, I recommend tempered glass. You can easily get a price from one or two local shops. Good luck.

I just put recirculating heaters on top. Keeps the dust away from the convection.

I would be worried about vibrations.

Yes, tubes can be microphonic, but I sure can't tell. Good grief if you play your Klipschorns like I do everything is going to vibrate!

I think glass would be the way to go, so long as it is heavy enough not to rattle

Getting into finer audio some years back, I some how for the first time in my life, had a brilliant thought, what if I build the wife her system "First"?
Being an imported amp guy for 40+ years, amps were the least of my concern.
Klipsch Scalas, then the Bells, then Khorns, Khorns won, she has 45 wpc KT88 mono blocks, optical connect to the PC and is quite a happy camper, and will not let me near "her" system.

One trick you can use is a heavy plastic floor liners you use in an office under your chair to protect the carpet. The topside is smooth but the underside has many small plastic spikes so the liner digs into the carpet and will not slide. You can buy these from an office supply store and cut them to fit the tops of your speakers and leave them with the smooth side face down and the plastic spikes facing up - the spikes will not harm your cat or dog as they are not that sharp but will train them not to lay there (or wherever) you would prefer they did not hang out. Works like a charm

Try these anti-bird spikes.

As I mentioned in my previous post, you can electrify them.
