Do I Really Need a BluRay Player?

My question to you is, are you willing to re-buy your movie collection in BR? IMO, what makes BR look better is mainly the BR movies. If you put a standard DVD movie in a BR player you may not see much improvements.

What's holding me back on a BR player is re-buying the movies in BR.

depending on the player the upconversion on a standard dvd is pretty good, though not as great as a BR title.

... don't rebuy. Just start from here and buy what's new.

The new sound codecs are a major reason for buying Blu-ray.

Do you listen to classical recordings -- opera, ballet, symphonies? If you do, buy the Oppo SE, and don't look back.

I did sort of an A/B with Serenity and Avatar since I have both the DVD and BR and though the DVD was good there were definite differences. I found the BR colors deeper and sharper. The BR sound was fuller.

Since you don't plan to go to surround I think the OPPO BDP-83 would be an excellent choice.

Julian.......Yes, I am speaking of the Oppo BDP-83 for you, since you use the player with a two channel sound system. That's why I chose the BDP-83 for my living room system. I use my McIntosh two channel solid state sound system in the living room, so no reason to pay for the newest Special Edition there. I just go stereo out to the preamplifier. It sounds fantastic.

The Oppo BDP-83 is built well, and feels substantial, not flimsy like so many BD players out there. The remote is backlit, and easy to use. The player's setup menus are very nice, and setup is a breeze. I am sure would you appreciate the quality build, and the amazing picture.

I bought a cheap BluRay player, it was junk, and it provided no improvement over my existing DVD players. I was disappointed.

I took it to another location, never to be seen again. (flushed it down the proverbial toilet)

Because the player was unsatisfactory, I only watched a couple of BluRay discs - didn't give them a chance.

No, I am not asking if I need a high end player, in fact I asked if the $499 OPPO would be an improvement over the player I bought, or over the DVD players I currently own. (The OPPO may well be "high end" but it is not "high cost")

To paraphrase what I asked, "Is BluRay worth the hassle?" In the posts to this thread, I think this question has been answered.
