Do some processors do it a lot better than others?
IMHO, no. If you are talking about expanding the number of channels from the ones in the source, that depends on the particular algorithm used (e.g., DPL, dts Neo, Trifield, Logic7, etc.).

Separation is pretty good on all modern electronics but the effectiveness of the channel separation and integration is more a function of room acoustics and setup.

Kal,

I am really attempting to ask this, Is one Pre-Amp processor any better really than any other at directing the 5.1 or 7.1 sound in the Blu-Ray Movie than another?

Or actually as long as the Pre-Amp processor is a modern piece of gear and can decode all the modern audio formats on a BRD they are basically equal in that regard.

Example the one I just purchased, the Integra DHC-80.3.
It makes me wonder if you spend double or triple the price of the Integra piece would you really get anything all that different in regards to them directing the sound to each channel.
I can't see spending $10,000.00 dollars for a Pre-Amp processor versus the Integra at $2,700.00 Dollars if they basically do the same thing.

I'm speaking of in a HT for watching movies for my application.

From Home Theater Magazine a few paragraphs,
Integra DHC-80.3 Surround Processor and DTA-70.1 Amplifier | Home Theater

When approaching the DHC-80.3’s design, Integra must have realized it
had already covered the gamut of available audio processing. Just look at
the list: THX Ultra2, Audyssey MultEQ XT32 with Dynamic EQ and DSX
processing, Dolby Pro Logic IIx and IIz, and Dolby Volume. Plus, add all
the requisite high-resolution audio formats, including full 7.1-channel
Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, and all your favorite audio
flavors are covered. The only notable audio feature added this year is DTS
Neo:X, which is DTS’s catch-up in the height and width game that
Audyssey introduced with DSX. But to take the cake, Integra has added a
video feature that steps into that future-proofing category more than
anything we’ve seen to date: scaling to 4K resolution.

I was already thrilled by the prospect of dual independent subwoofer
equalization, but the increase in filter resolution isn’t subtle. Fine detail in
recordings sounded better than ever, and the slight harshness I
occasionally noticed in the midrange is gone. While I would always rely on
Audyssey for movie soundtracks, I wasn’t always a fan with music
playback. Not so anymore. MultEQ XT32 does a beautiful job with every
facet of the audible spectrum and coaxed even the finest details out of
the recordings I listened to. At the end of the day, this is the reason to
own this processor. I love the other bells and whistles the DHC-80.3
brings to the table, but this is one feature that stands to noticeably
improve the sound of your system.

As I said, as long as we are talking about discrete source channels, there is no difference in this regard as all modern devices have more than adequate channel separation. Steering logic is not involved.

If, otoh, you start to invoke surround processing (e.g., DPL, etc.), some algorithms are more suitable for some signals than others.

Finally, the subjective impression of soundstage distribution, breadth and specificity are more a result of speaker design, placement and room acoustics. See Floyd Toole's book for lots on this.

Kal,

Thanks for the information.
I think I understand what you are saying.
