Default Ref40 input confusion

My ref40 has about 3000hrs on it. Just noticed that although I am using XLR as input source, when I switch to Single Ended input (SE) mode, I still get music. Is this normal ? So far I have noticed this for 2 of the inputs. One of the inputs has lower volume in SE while input was actually XLR.

Regards,
Joe Ling

sounds nice)

My Ref5 works the same way. The LS27 I demoed did the same thing, but I wondered why also.

Hi Lunchy,

Thanks for the lightning fast reply. So I guess it is normal then. Well, one less excuse to switch to the ref10 then

My Ref 5 and Ref 40 did the same. Normal for ARC line stage. Guess the reason can be answered by ARC or a few guys here who own authorized ARC repair facilities.

Both the XLR and SE inputs are wired to the same "input" on the preamp board. They aren't 2 separate inputs. The SE/Balanced switch merely changes the way the grounding is done for the XLR vs the SE incoming signal.

When SE is selected the negative input pin 3 of the XLR is shorted to ground to reduce noise. The gain will also drop by 3 dB since the negative input is shorted.

If you use RCA INPUT and don't select SE, you may hear some hum/hiss.

Only one small correction - the gain will drop by 6dB.
