It is unfortunate when someone like oneobgyn takes my kindness for weakness. After just becoming a member today and posting links to his site twice, which I permitted. He then went on a mission to PM all of our users here on AA to visit his site:

You have received a new private message at AudioAficionado.org from oneobgyn, entitled "Have a look at our new forum".

To read the original version, respond to, or delete this message, you must log in here: http://audioaficionado.org/private.php

This is the message that was sent:
***************
"We want new members like you.

Have a look and spread the word"

This action of course will not be tolerated and he has since been banned for life. We could have easilly coexisted, but he chose his own destiny.

Just thought I would let everyone know.

Hello XS-fans!

The XS Subwoofer ist really very big and heavy. Some people call him telephon box. It has nearly the dimension of an old red British telephon box. Two 18 inch drivers are incorporated. That is good for very deep frequencys.

But futher development brought improvement. The Thor's Hammer (newer model) incorporates two 15 inch long stroke drivers. The advantages:
1. reduced partial vibrations in the membrane due to the reduced diameter of the drivers
2. A subwoofer must move air!!!!!!! Long stroke drivers are able to do this very well.
3. Smaller drivers are faster.

So the result is a faster and smaller subwoofer with much power, ability to reproduce very deep frequencys and with more accurateness. Reproducing deep frequencys? That requires more level then reproducing higher frequencys. Long stroke should be helpful.

My X-1 Grand SLAMM III (each) has a 15 inch bass driver. The punch of the deep bass is enormous. But if I had a bigger room, I would add two! Thor's Hammer or two Revel Ultima Rhythm 2. The Revel Ultima Rhythm 2 has only one driver per subwoofer. Two drivers in each Subwoofer are better, because they can easier move air. That means each driver needs less stroke for moving the same air. I think that would cause an advantage in speed.

The subwoofer amplifier. Yes, you need power and once more power! Ask for a welding equipment or a power plant. :-)

The Revel Ultima Rhythm 2 compensates only one driver with the following integrated amplifier: Power Output 2400W RMS, 5600W peak
The 18 inch membran of the Rhythem 2 ist very rigid.

But with the Wilson Thor's Hammer you have more options using different amplifiers and customised crossovers. The Hammer should be faster and better linked to the main speakers. The problem of the time delay of a subwoofer is smaller.

Best regards!
Friedrich

"That means each driver needs less stroke for moving the same air. I think that would cause an advantage in speed."

The above is also the definition of why the xs is not necessarily "slower" than the 15" drivers.

The xs was a no compromise attempt - size be damned. I was working at Wilson audio when it was designed and built. I haven't compared it to the hammer direcly, but it is certainly possible that it is a more effortless sub, due to size and ability to theoretically move more air. Actually, I think one of the major reasons they stopped producing it was the difficulty of transporting it. When I recieved the last one ever produced and it had damge, the thought of trying to re pack it and ship it back was horrifying. Shortly after dealing with this they announced no more. The xs is truly awesome.
