I just finished The Silmarillion, by J.R.R. Tolkien. It is a jewel if you are a fan and drivel if you are not. I'm a fan!

Sorry, but your comments confused me. Could you be a bit more specific on why you admire Buffett less after reading the book?

Yikes +1. I re-read this recently and it is no less terrifying than when we were in the depths of the recession.

Senator Elizabeth Warren commented yesterday that the large banks/financial firms still around that most believe were culpable in bringing the economy to the brink of collapse are now 30% bigger than in 2008.

Yikes!

He was after money for the sake of money and devoted his whole life to making money at the depends of other relationships and more interesting aspects of life.

To me it was a quest without a purpose. Sure, he's the greatest investor of all time but the price is too great in my opinion. There is a dichotomy between the investing legend and the man that made me dislike the man.

To me, money is a mean to an end but it is not the end and should never be.

OK, thanks for responding. I haven't read the book but your judgement seems a bit harsh..after all, he has pledged 99% of his fortune, mostly through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, to philanthropic causes. He has been quoted often regarding his views of his wealth and his obligation to to use it for the betterment of society and the world. This seems at odds with your view that he sees the accumulation of wealth as the be all and end all..

Perhaps the author's depiction was something less than a balanced account of the man?

The philanthropy and donation are relatively new including giving money to its children. It was different in his first 50 or so years. He has a reputation as a cheapskate and well deserved in my opinion.

The author is quite balanced and leaning more toward him as you can read that she tries to redeem him at the end. But still I was left disappointed.

You should read the book !
