Jerome, yes the very low compliance of the Denon 103R is really suited for a higher mass tonearm than the Clearaudio Satisfy. Why didn't your dealer tell you? Why don't you ask him if he knows how to calculate the resonant frequencies or has even heard of it.... Don't assume every dealer is knowledgeable about setup, this if far from the truth.
My own 103R (same specs as 103 as far as weight and compliance) was mounted on the SME 309 tonearm which is almost the same effective weight as yours. Using slightly longer, thus slightly heavier mounting screws, has resulted in resonant frequency of about 12-13Hz as confirmed by a test record. Still a bit over the optimum range but without any sonic penalties. I certainly did not get any woofer pumping like you are! Now, as to your problem... Woofer pumping can be caused by rumble and acoustical feedback as has already been mentioned by others. It is hard to really see in the video but it almost looks like your cartridge and arm are suffering from vertical resonance... How old is this cartridge? Is it possible the cats may have damaged the cartridge suspension? Are there some kind of vibrations in the floor for some reason other than your system playing? |

Serge, low compliance cart and lowish mass arms = hitting a speed bump at 50 MPH, ain't gonna be good.....your Vertical resonance is pretty much going on here....

My 103R is the lowest compliance cart I have owned and I never had that kind of a problem Jeff.

Jerome, is this a new problem? Is it possible you never noticed before? It would be a bit odd if it just started out of the blue.. I think your cats really did have something to do with this.

Low compliance cartridge produce high amounts of energy and I hear you about the 309 arm, most likely its absorbs and disapates energy better than the satisfy arm.....as a whole the 309 is a bit more heavy than the Satisfy and that may account for your 103 tracking fine.....regardless the 103 numbers are not good per the resonance calculator for the Satisfy.

First, the TT is on a suspended floor but no vibes other than the sound of the system can hit the TT. Moreover, the cats cannot have damaged the cart or the stylus : the arm is always on its resting position when not playing and the cart is always covered by its protection. But they may have damaged the bearing of the TT. I will put the Talisman again tomorrow and will see what happens. It is a new event actually. I set up the cart about 1 month ago. There is still a possibility that I did not notice it before : I listen at very moderate levels and at these levels, everything is fine. Jean Marc is almost deaf ( just kidding buddy ) and listen at high levels so we both noticed this immediately : this could be related only to the volume.

First of all I was very happy to meet you again after more than a year, which was very busy, for me, and which allowed you to make a bunch of changes (it seems however you are not on the same level than Serge !) No, I'm not deaf my friend, but I was very very disappointed with what I listened to, there was a total lack of bass! So we first played with the ohms (you had 1000 ohms, and I remembered my Denon 103 R I used around 100 ohms), and yes it did sound much better, but not really good, excuse be if I offended you at this moment, but I couldn't let you listen in these conditions. On the way back home, I called the friend you know and he was OK with me about an acoustical feedback and about the ohms to use, he added that in YOUR ROOM he knows, you have only 2 solutions to improve dramatically your sound: put the bucks on heavy acoustical treatment, or reintroduce the Lyngdorf RP1 ( that I suggested too). You should also move the Clearaudio, perhaps it's the place which doesn't fit, and yes, mount again the Talisman, which sounded very very good one year ago. Again, thank you, and see you very soon, don't forget December we'll compare in my home MSB (with the French importer) and the MDA1000 . |
