Anyone on here ever have / audition any Audio Research gear? Their reference line has gotten some rave reviews. And they have a 600 watt tube amp!

Anyone...
Anyone..

I have. My Linn dealer carries the ARC line. McIntosh, in my opinion, has got them beat in tubes/solid state/digital.

Athough I've never owned any, I've auditioned some..it's very, very nice gear indeed, they've been around a long time and have an excellect reputation. AA member salmtpa has an Audio Research preamp, I had the pleasure of auditioning it a few months ago and was impressed. Perhaps he will chime in here...I believe he has the LS26 preamp, it's driving a McIntosh MC402 Amp. Very nice combo.

I auditioned the Audio Research LS26 preamp, and was impressed. It is a very quiet tube preamp, pure Class A, balanced, and sounds very good. There are a lot of things to like about the LS26. I thought a nice touch was the LS26's hour meter for tube life. It's a thoughful extra.

I like the LS 26 for a single box, balanced, class A preamp.

It could make me give up my all Mc rack.

Why won't Mc give us a balance single box pre?

I used an LS8 mkII and loved it. Simple, tube characteristics, complimented my SS amp and fit my budget at the time. Used it with a Bryston 4BSST powering PMC AB1's. And yep, that set up cranked.

The local AR Dealer has some of the Reference gear on display but not the $40k 610 mono blocks. His shop is not really set up well and your speaker choices are either Magnepan or Vandersteen. It is really hard for me to get a handle on the gear, it sounds good but it does not excite me. I could see where many tube lovers would like the sound and the resale seems to be pretty good.

I don't care for most of the ARC "house sound" it is a little bleached and lean for my taste. I would prefer McIntosh over ARC at a slight loss of detail and resolution but a gain of "richness and fullness" of sound. In fact I liked BAT over ARC as well.... Others may disagree.
