Everything you think you know about bald eagles is wrong__Pop Sci
`
https://www.popsci.com/bald-eagles-f...m_medium=email ----------------------------------- "You know the sound you hear every time there's a bald eagle in a movie or TV show? Yeah, that's not a bald eagle. This bald eagle fact became more widespread knowledge in 2012, when NPR published a story about how widespread this Hollywood mixup is." "... why Benjamin Franklin didn't think America's symbol should be an eagle. It's a popular myth that he wanted the turkey instead (the Smithsonian says he just suggested that the bird on the proposed American seal looked like it was a turkey and that turkeys were more respectable bird)..." .

Well, I know they are of a class of birds known as "raptors".
Is that wrong?

We have several Bald Eagles out front, yes their sound is unique.
What’s interesting is when they fly in, the area crows assemble a squadron and work on intimidating them, even when they land the are dive bombed until the crows get tired. I have seen an Eagle swoop down on the water and pull a Salmon - pretty awesome! This past summer, we had Eagles in the trees, a whale off the island and porpoises all at the same time - pretty sweet! This all takes place out front of my home, lucky to experience this. |

We live on a lake in Wisconsin and the Eagles are amazing to watch. They live in big pine trees just off of our deck. They are really lethal for rodents and fish. When friends visit with small dogs they get very interested in the happenings on our deck

We live along a lake/river and see them, along with osprey, hawks, etc., quite often in the warmer weather.
If you are in the mid-Atlantic region and wish to see eagles, winter is the time. They winter-over just below the Conowingo dam on the Susquehanna river where Rt 1 goes across. At the south end of the dam there is a small power plant and a park (Shuresville Landing?) at the bottom of the spillway for the power plant. Any number of large trees planted along the banks just downstream of the spillway and there will be ~100+ eagles around the area feeding off the fish that go thru the turbines and are stunned, so easy pickings. Many flying or sitting out on the power-line supports in the middle of the river. Most are mature Bald Eagles, with the rest being immature without the white head, a thin scattering of Golden Eagles and many black vultures that scavenge off the eagles. Great place to see them. Is always a surprise to see so many in the same place. Here's a link to some eagles at the Conowingo dam. I especially like the one with six of them sitting on one of the power-line supports. https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attracti...7&ff=389175677
