Default KT150 in ref 250

Ok I have done it. Jumped the gun even before the amp is repaired & order 18pcs of matched KT150s from tube depot (2 spares).

Once the amp is repaired, I will put them in & see how it goes. If it does not work out, I might check out the Ayon Orthos XS

Regards,
Joe Ling

Source 2 - Avid Acutus SP reference + Thales Reference tone arm + Benz Micro LPS (DS Audio Master 1 broken tip repaired but cost me USD2k. Still having issues - channel imbalance - back to dealer. However, channel issues not withstanding, sounded very very nice. Need to get it back soonest)

Source 3 - DCS Vivaldi + Antelope reference clock or Cybershaft Op18 (not floating my boat so far)

Source 5 - ROON ROCK with Aurender W20 as NAS & 2 units of SOTM switch with 10M input (the new frontier but still cannot beat CD for now) - ROON endpoint - Vivaldi upsampler

Amplification - Naim Statement

Speakers - ProAc Carbon 8 + JL FM113 x2 (replacement purchased - Stella Utopia EVO but due to lockdown, could be a year's wait)

Purepower 2000 x 2 (&$@#% but
sounds nice)

Joe...I would definitely have your dealer check with ARC if you can just drop the KT150s in to the Ref 250. They may be incompatible with the transformer on board or you may have to dial down the bias down to whatever the setting us for the Kt120. I would not just drop them in and cross your fingers unless you are willing to turn around and ship the 250s right back to ARC after they come back from their repair in case something happens. Just my 2c.

I agree. If you aren't happy w/ the Ref 250s (whatever the reason) that's not likely to be cured by dropping in the 150s w/o some prior homework. In fact, there's a significant likelihood of making things worse. Strongly suggest a moment for reflection prior to going forward.

A little birdy told me that they have been testing KT150's in Ref 250's for some time
and they very much like what they hear…so I would say go for it.

If they have then they should be willing to okay the drop-in replacement when asked. Better to ask then Kalvin at ARC then to be sorry. It's a simple phone call. Not sure what the downside is of getting the additional assurance. Joe...just have your dealer call on your behalf if you don't want to bother with it. You will get an answer one way or another from ARC and have piece of mind before testing it out blindly.

I do not believe they are done testing and even if they are and they like the KT150's, I don't think they would sign off on putting in KT150's that they themselves hadn't run in and sold. This is in the same category of buying your tubes from a third party.

Interesting that a little birdie told you. I got the same story straight from the horse's mouth at CES.

Businesses with a lot of equipment and a reputation at stake tend to be more cautious and take time to test and make decisions. Audiophiles tend to be more impatient.

Yes, yes they do. On both counts.
