Just wondering if anyone has upgraded an older BAT tube preamp to one of the newer versions that replace the output caps with transformers. I'm thinking of upgrading my VK-32SE to VK-33SE, based mainly on my experience of other quality tube preamps that use output transformers. However, before investing circa $3500 for the upgrade, it would be helpful to get some comments from other listeners who are in a position to compare the "before-and-after" performance. Thanks! Joel.

Output transformers on preamplifiers offer many advantages over capacitors. Allnic Audio, among others, has used these for some years. I'm torn between upgrading my BAT VK-32SE to VK-33SE or saving up for a VK-53SE.

For around same cost (or less) you can get a used REX. No idea how it compares to new 53se, but do know its one of the best pres I have heard or owned. IMO its a better pre than the REX amps are amps. Looking back I should have not sold the REX pre and instead sold the amps. just my 2cents.

No, but if funds were here I'd own one. Using the preamp of my Mcintosh MA8000 integrated into the REX amps for now. I use one of its phonostages and the DAC which makes it very convenient. When summer hits and heat in room becomes an issue I just semi retire the BAT amps and use the Mac only. I'm going to Axpona so I'm betting i'll here all the new BAT gear in the Music direct room. I think the Mac pre is pretty much the C50 preamp.
