Hi Matt,

Good to see you joined this premier site. I enjoyed our e-mail conversations talking about experimenting pairing up my Burmester amps with a Shindo Vose preamp.

Matt...You can guarantee I'll be swinging by at some point, you're only about 6 hours drive away and my company headquarters is not too far from you (San Ramon).

I agree with you about the Trade Show thing, meeting people and finding new music is really the best part about it...I went to T.H.E. show in Newport Beach (my first trade show) and to be honest I wasn't blown away like I thought I would be. Needless to say it didn't help me understand anymore than I already was aware of at that point. There were some glimmers but they were few and far apart.

I've also been intrigued by Burmester gear so if only out of curiosity would like to hear how a Shindo Pre / Burmester Amp combo works out. It's too bad you don't have a Burmester DAC to play with, I'd be interested in hearing how that integrates separately into a full Shindo system as well.

Just realized my response kind of addresses a post here along with a different post on the other active Shindo thread...yep, I'm that efficient

Guys,

I'm a bit more quiet since not English native speaking, but some of you have seen that I own a SHINDO Monbrison preamp. It is actually a Year 2002 model so not the one with the Plexiglass window but the older, slimer, model. In fact, this model is full of NOS components (resistors and capacitors + tubes).
The Euro distributor told me it is actually comparable more to a new MASSETO than to the current MONBRISON v2.

Does anyone of you, Matt in particular, have some experience with the 'older' SHINDO gear like my preamp (also the CATHERINE dual chassis was something very special )

Cheers.

Hi Cellindo,

I wouldn't call that accurate that the older Monbrison is comparable to a new Masseto. With all preamps, Shindo starts with a 'fresh piece of paper' and designs a completely new model based upon his desire to work around a specific pentode tube. The Masseto has a different circuit than the either Monbrison and, as well, uses output transformers (much like a power amp).

The current Monbrison definitely shares the same lineage as the superb older model, and is an evolution of it's design. They all have judicious use of vintage components in critical sonic locations where it makes sense to use them. These parts are wired in place with modern components to achieve the musical design goals of that product. Suffice to say, your older Monbrison is a keeper and great to build a system around!

Thanks Matt,

Actually in 2008 I was owning the two Monbrison. During a couple of months I did a side by side comparison of the 'old' one (Y2002) and the new one (Y2007 bought as 2nd hand). After much listening I figured out that the new v2 is more transparent and faithful to the source. However the old model has a sense of musical flow and respect of the timing that was impossible to match. Both are superb indeed, but I still preferred to keep the original, almost vintage, model.

I'm today wondering if a Masseto could do better (very possibly Yes thanks to its output transformers).
