Default Decca Sound The Analogue Years CD49

From my cherished box set:

Ravel - L'Enfant et les Sortilèges
Motet Choir of Geneva
L'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande
, Ernest Ansermet

Remarkably clear stereo recording from '54.
It sounds dated of course, and you hear the tape hiss (which is a good thing, as you know they didn't compress the recording), but still very good insight into the stage with the singers and orchestra.

Bonus tracks:

Ma Mère l'Oye - Suite

Recorded in '57.

Natacha Kudritskaya, piano
RAMEAU
via Qobuz

Very nice, but my favourite piano rendering of these pieces is still Angela Hewitt.

Default What Classical Music Are You Listening To Tonight?

Roger Sacheverell Coke: Cello Sonatas
Raphael Wallfisch, Simon Callaghan
Lyrita (2020), via Qobuz

I’ve never heard of Coke, this is quite interesting. From Jed Distler at Classicstoday:

“Composer and pianist Roger Sacheverell Coke (1912-1972) was born into an affluent family and produced a large body of works before a number of mental and physical health problems took their toll. Coke bankrolled concerts to promote his music, yet critical acclaim largely eluded him. Then again, his unabashedly Romantic idiom, heavily influenced by Rachmaninov, had fallen out of fashion. However, pianist Simon Callaghan’s passionate advocacy on Coke’s behalf may be spearheading a revival. If you like early 20th-century British Romantics like Arnold Bax, Cyril Scott, and York Bowen, you’ll definitely respond to Coke’s aesthetic.”

A special request from my wife:

Jean Cocteau, text
François Poulenc - La Voix Humaine
Orchestre du Théâtre National de L'Opéra-Comique, Georges Prêtre
Denise Duval, soprano
via Qobuz

Fascinating work, composed in '58, and recorded in '59.
When I read Fanfare Magazine, this still seems to be the reference performance.
Dynamics are very good, Duvall's voice wonderfully taped.

Interesting historical bonus: the '53 recording of 'Le Bel Indifférent' with Edith Piaf.

Jan Antonín Losy - Note d'Oro
Jakob Lindberg, lute
Qobuz 24/192

Wonderful works by a colleague of the predecessor of Bach, Johann Kuhnau.
The recording is great (I want to hear it in 5.0!).
The instrument from 1590 sounds great.

Original DG Tulip vinyl press found in bargain bin. Not too bad but heard much better.
