Listening to . . . A recording sent out by free by , , Arkiv Music
Upon my renewal of LISTEN Magazine - and what a recording it is !!!!

On three (3) Excellent CDs

Bach Keyboard Masterworks - Andrew Rangell, Piano

The Goldberg Variations, The Six Partitas, The Musical Offering: 2 Ricercars. Toccata in F Sharp minor.
A three disc set produced by Steinway and Sons

Fabulous sound, exquisite playing, superb tonality - the sound of Steinway played by a very accomplished pianist.

Kudos to Steinway for the recording and to Arkiv Music for both Listen Magazine (which it publishes) and for the superb gift.

I find the rhythmic intensity quite appealing--great playing and sound, too.

In fact, I'm listening now to Brahms Symphony No. 1 from the award winning set.

Johannes Brahms - The Four Symphonies
Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra - Herbert von Karajan, Conductor

An excellent recording and winner of the Grand Prix du Disque - Paris.

But it is pretty old, and I'd like to have a good SACD set or something equivalent.

Suggestions?
Hi, Julian.

I like these sets:

Gewandhausorchester, Riccardo Chailly - excellent sonics and engaging interpretations.

Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Nikolaus Harnoncourt - excellent live recordings with typical Harnoncourt idiosyncrasies that I always find interesting such as freshly considered articulation and clarified counterpoint, prominent brass and horns.

Listening to . . . Bach B Minor Mass

An RCA Living Stereo 3 LP Box Set - recorded in 1961

Robert Shaw Chorale and Orchestra
Robert Shaw - Conductor

I'v always felt that Maestro Robert Shaw could make a choir of hedgehogs make beautiful music. He had the knack of bringing the very best out of massed singers and soloists, and his chorale was certainly one of the best of its time. This recording is just plain beautiful - with strong voices and excellent backup from Shaw's own personal pick-up orchestra.

Listening to another outstanding Linn recording in 24/192
Corelli: Opus 6 - Concerti Grossi, The Avison Ensemble

I had never listened to any Corelli until one of you regulars (Julian perhaps?) posted the violin sonatas here. I now have 3 of the Avison Corelli recordings and they're all gorgeous.

I tried, I really tried but I couldn't make it through all of this one. It is way, way too modern for my tastes! I doubt if this one will ever see the TT again. Oh well considering it only cost me $3.75 I can't complain.
