For the used unit of SF Mementos and Sonus Faber Elipsa are almost the same, do you guys try to compare them side by side?

The SF Elipsa is quite a bit larger in size and is a full range floor standing speaker. It is the little brother to the SF Strad; having a similar flavor in the low end as the SF Strads due to its use of the same woofer however the SF Strad has 2 woofers per speaker instead of one which allows the Strad to go down to 20 hz and the Elipsa 30 hz. . Listening to the Elipsa you would not feel that you need a sub. The midrange and tweeter are specially designed for the Elipsa. . Due to the size of both the SF Strads and Elipsa you will need a decent size room for best results. Imaging with the SF Elipsa is nearly in the same league as the SF Mementos but not quite. What the SF Mementos lacks in the low end the SF Elipsa has making it much better for someone who likes to play music loud especially for rock music and conveying the feeling of a large classical music hall. Both speakers are terrific for jazz, vocals, acoustic string instruments. The fit and finish on the SF Elipsa is also very attractive but does not have the high gloss finish; it is more of a semi gloss. The front and back have leather and the semi transparent elastic string grill that is also a trademark with the homage line. Last edited by 1KW; 04-24-2010 at 08:23 AM. |

It has been about 6 weeks since the SF Elipsa's were brought home and they have really broken in nicely. The Elipsa's are extending down to 25 hz now (using a test tone), the bass is rich adding depth to the soundstage. I am not regretting putting the JL sub in the home theater. The speaker paired with Mcintosh as a whole has remarkable detail, transparency, focus, and ability to communicate musical emotion.

I can only imagine how good your Elipsa's must sound. As I sit here, listening to my Auditors + dual RELs at 40watts, the Anthony Wilson Trio is in my room playing right in front of me. Amazing. I don't know how it could get any better in this small room. The Sonus sound is my sound. I feel so fortunate to have found the Mc/Sonus synergy. Again, I can only imagine what you must be hearing with the Elipsa's

David, just curious, you say the Elipsa's are extending down to 25hz now using a test tone. What were they doing out of the box? I have never had a loudspeaker that measured a change in bass extension changed over time.
My experience is that if your main speakers go cleanly to 35hz (even a solid 40hz can do the trick) you are pretty much set when listening to music, so I am not surprised that you do not miss the sub. Glad that the Elipsa's are everything you were hoping for.

Initially down to 30 hz even at low volume ie 15 on the pre amp. I had to really turn the pre amp up to 50 to hear down to 25 or 20 hz, now even at lower volumes I can hear the test tone. I assume it is due to the rubber surround on the woofer breaking in. The speaker sounded very good when it was first installed but as it broke in I had to remove the sub as it was just too much. I plan to keep these speakers for a long time. |

Last time at Hi End Exhibition in Munich Sonus Faber introduced Elipsa speaker with new red violun glossy finish - the same like in Stradivarii.
I hope that they introduce this finish (maybe as an option) to regular offer. I also hope that SF will ofer simillar glossy finish in graphite. |
