If sitting 8 feet away, your 77 inch TV is a good size. However, since you mentioned that you have a 12.5' x 12' room and you are making changes in the room, you may consider rearranging the room to allow you to sit farther back. Then you could install a screen on the wall. (Your 12.5' or 12' feet wall should easily accommodate a retractable screen). In my experience, if audio is 50% of the experience, then video is the bigger 50% And by the way, sitting farther away can also help you take better advantage of whichever center channel you end up with. |

We watch a variety of programming which include old movies to current releases of all genres with no multichannel music. To me, a timbre matched front L+C+R is more important than a larger screen. I misspoke regarding the distance from our present seating position relative to the video screen of our new 77” display. The distance which I had saved from my old notes of 8’ from the display to our seating position was with our former 60” Kuro plasma which was stand-mounted and a few feet in front of the position where our wall-mounted 77” OLED now resides. I remeasured the distance which puts the viewing distance at 10’ from our seating position which is unfortunately is backed up against the back wall which isn’t sonically optimal, but necessary due to room constraints. Room correction and room treatment do help though. Three top notch home theater designers told us that a projector wouldn’t be optimal in our small intimate room and my wife wants no part of a projector. She has the last say on these matters. |

I have a 117 inch screen and initially I had a 3 000 USD center channel with my Amati Futura. One day i decide to try with out. And it sounds better IMO as the sound floats seamlessly between L and R. If you have a center it is usually positioned much lower than the treble elements of the Futuras. So if a person walks from left to right the sound goes from 1 meter, down to 50 cm and then back up to 1 meter again. Give it a go. If it does not work for you - you have had many great suggestions.

Just a postscript: I built my home theater over two decades ago. Throughout this time, the CC has always been different than my main speakers (the CC has always been a box speaker; the mains at times have included planars and omnidirectional speakers). During that time, nobody has ever noticed or said anything about the timbre, yet my CC cost less than 1/10 of my main speakers.
My center channel is hidden behind a screened wood panel. You cannot tell that there is a speaker behind the panel. And for two decades folks cannot even tell if the CC is on or off! In movies, when you hear sound panning from one side to the other, it is very difficult to tell a difference in "timbre" when you consider that those panning sounds usually include other LOUD moving sounds coming from the other speakers and subwoofers! Dialogs come from the CC and the mains are really only filling in (that is by design, since in movies you are NOT supposed to hear the SAME sounds from the main speakers and the CC). I believe that the mind plays a big role. When one can actually "see" a small CC sitting between two towering main speakers, one immediately notices (real or imagined) differences . The visual can play tricks on what you 'hear'. Last edited by nicoff; 01-16-2020 at 07:51 PM. |

If you don't sit too far off axis a phantom center may work for you. I run a phantom center in our Wisconsin home and it works if you stay within about 30 degrees of the main speaker's centerline. That's with Ohm F main speakers, which are omni-directional. Any further off center and the dialog positioning doesn't match the actor's screen position anymore.
I've never tried it with the Futura's because I already have the Vox center and it would be a real bitch if it sounded better without it. I don't experience any timbre or position shifting, and voices appear to come from the actors, so I think it's all integrated really well.

Thanks for the further suggestions.
I am going to keep the ProAc CC and see it how it works out with the Amati Futuras. My guess is that it will work out just fine. Only if it doesn’t, then will I explore a new CC. As for not seeing it physically, even though our CC is mounted on an AV rack below the display, we don’t normally see it as 99.9% of our viewing is in a complete dark room and the grill is black, so it’s physical presence and any associated psychological effects do not come into play. |
