I also saw the crates for Paragon's pair of Wilson Alexia's as they arrived yesterday. These should be set up today to start the break-in period.
Would love to hear what you think of the Doshi preamp and the Momentum preamp...

I thought the Doshi AAlp 3.0 complimented the Momentum mono blocks very nicely. Vocals were outstanding. The bottom end may have lost a bit of tightness but added a bit of musicality. I still prefer the top end of good SS over any tube pre I have ever heard.

Adding a remote control to the new Doshi pre was very important for someone who listens to a lot of server based music. As volume levels vary significantly from disc to disc I would be jumping up with every disc change to correct for these differences.

I have added this pre-amp to my short of possible contenders.

Dan, yes I made it to Thursdays event which was the first of this two day event. I posted some thoughts on the new pre in another thread.

http://www.audioaficionado.org/event...und-event.html

As I stated in that thread there was excellent synergy between the mono blocks and his new linestage. Dan D'Agostino noted that he had built something into the mono blocks and into the new pre that when connected made them very, very quiet. You could put your ear to the tweeter of the Alexia's and hear absolute silence.

There will still be those who question the industrial design of the new pre amp. I found it to be much nicer looking in person just as I had with the mono blocks. I just do not know whether I am willing to pay a +$30k tariff for any pre-amp.

Jim,

Thank you very much for responding. I think it's true that with the Alaap the bottom end becomes a bit looser. Some would argue that it's more natural, but what ultimately matters is whether you like that - or at least find it a worthwhile tradeoff.

I use a music server with my Alaap 2.1 (no remote). However, I use an iPad with JRemote to control the server and I adjust the volume in the digital domain with (to my ears) no sonic degradation.

As for the high frequencies, I find that with the Alaap I get more body that results in more lifelike cymbals etc than with a solid state pre which usually sounds more thin - at least with Wilson speakers, but of course like all things in audio, it's all subjective.

Thanks again for your response.
Ian

You'd be surprised how much better the Doshi's bass sounds with some tube swapping. If you don't want to go the Tele ECC801S route, get ahold of some Mullard CV4024 from Uncle Kevin at Upscale Audio for $35. The JJ ECC83s suck the big one one and some reissued Tungsol ECC83s do quite nicely. Conversely some 60-70's vintage Tesla ECC83s are an even nicer improvement. Then give a listen to the Doshi and you'll be shocked how good it really is!

While I'm using Siemens in the ECC81 slots, I am using the JJ ECC83's because I haven't been able to find any vintage Tesla's (if you know a source, let me know!). I will try the Tungsol reissues (assuming they aren't hard to find).

No you can get the ultra low noise selected Tungsols, as well as the 4024s, from Uncle Kevin at Upscale Audio. Cheap upgrade. Just let the CV4024s burn in for 100 hours. For some reason, take a while for them to settle in--plus you get for free that Mullard "flash" everytime you turn the unit on!

The JJs are the bottom of the food chain; I had four go within 100-150 hours. I tried the 803S and 83CC version and the sound was basically the same. Ugh....
