I note that when dialing in my SDS every few months or so, placing the stylus in the record grooves WILL slow the speed of the platter even with a Superplatter on an HRX. It is not a substantial difference, but it is measurable and can be heard if one listens closely enough. Because a stylus in grooves containing loud passages slow the platter speed more than soft passages, I try to work with passages that are moderate and fix the speed there. I'm not interested in adjusting the speed more than once every few months.

Needle drag/speed control is pretty much a non-issue in the higher end TTs of today, like the Prime Sig and Clearaudio being mentioned. As stated, the inertia of the heavy platters takes care of any issues with same. Too bad Phoenix Engr'g is no longer in business. They offered a low-cost 'peace of mind' tachometer/speed control system for our TTs.
