Do I Really Need a BluRay Player?
Points to consider.
1. I own three very good DVD players - McIntosh MVP 871, Lexicon RT-20, and Pioneer Elite DV-09. 2. I bought a "cheap" BluRay player (Samsung) and I thought the picture quality was better from all three of my DVD players, playing DVD's, than it was from the Samsung playing BluRay discs. - - - - I took the thing to my weekend house and promptly forgot its existence. 3. The cheap BluRay player felt like junk compared to the above - slow loading, poor build quality. I was totally unimpressed! 4. I do not "do" home theater - only watch movies on my television set - with the audio running, in stereo, through a two channel pre-amp - no multi-channel, not now, probably not ever. 5. I have a couple of very good Sony HD television sets - one a 63" (rear projection) and the other a 50" (LCD). (both 1080P) No intention to get anything larger. Lots of hoopla about BluRay, and I'm sure that a really good player would make an improvement when watching movies, but, do I really need to make this particular plunge? and, how much player would I need to buy to make a significant improvement over what I already own? Would I see a difference with, say, an Oppo player, or would I need to spend "big bucks" (which I probably won't do) Many thanks for your advice!!! The video engines on most Blu-Ray players are virtually the same. Since you are not using it in a HT where the Audio is more important, just stick with the low cost units that you can swap out as the technology continues to change.

Doesn't sound like you need one to me. I concur with Jim, however, that for your purposes, if you get one, get another cheap one. That's what I did because I very seldom watch movies, but wanted to be able to use Blu-Ray if the urge struck.

For me one of the most compelling features of Blu Ray is the high definition surround codecs. If you are not doing surround and you are happy with what you are getting from standard DVD's, then I see no reason for the Blu Ray at this point in time.

Julian.......At the risk of sounding like a broken record, the Oppo BDP83 Blu-ray player is a spectacular video component, both for standard DVD's and Blu-ray discs. For me, Blu-ray 1080p offers the sharpest video details and the widest color spectrum I have ever experienced, and is certainly an improvement over standard DVD playback at 480p. The Oppo BDP83 upconverts standard DVD's to 1080i using the the newest video processing technology from the excellent and well reviewed Anchor Bay chipset. I now have replaced all four DVD players in my home to Blu-ray players, with one being the Oppo BDP-83 in the living room with the two channel sound system, and another being the Oppo BDP-83SE in the studio with the MX120 surround sound system. The other two Blu-ray players are a Sony BDP-S560 in the bedroom, and a Panasonic BMP-BD10A in my office.
On displays capable of 1080p definition, Blu-ray is sharper, clearer, with greater edge detail, and amazing color spectrum and saturation. The upconversion of 480p standard DVD's to 1080i creates a marked improvement of that format to my eyes, as well. For me, there's no question, Blu-ray produces a more enjoyable viewing experience.
