W9TR - check out the cabins offered in and around Hana on AirBNB. Close to the ocean. Last time we stayed there the shower was outside and it was not a problem as the other nearest cabin was 100yd+ away thru the 'jungle', so no worries about 'peepers'. Was entertaining to watch the geckos run around on the screens eating any wayward insect that might have been a bother. On the flip side, Hana is a long drive (time) from the rest of the island.

Take a look at the cats in Hana living together with the loose chicken like they do in the Florida Keys.

Haleakala of course.

The whole Island and it's microclimate zones is amazing and not as developed like you probably may like.

If you like diving, you must dive the back wall, the cathedrals and do a night dive.

Since you plan on going December January, you can see whales and if you dive you will feel like a subwoofer is on underwater, while the whales sing, etc.
A truly amazing experience.

You will pretty much love the whole Island and adventures you can do, or.... just relax on the beach.

Thanks, we'll definitely check it out. Sounds fantastic. I love to dive but haven't done it for a long time.

Been to Maui maybe 6x... always stay at the south end, Wailea. Stayed at the Waldorf/Grand Wailea twice, and the rest of the 4x at the Four Seasons.

Heaven on Earth indeed.

Can't wait to go back in a couple years when the kids are bigger...

Glenn, Hana gets up to 300 inches of rain per year. Especially in the winter. When were you there?

Hey all,

My wife and I are seriously considering a trip to Maui for our 30th anniversary next year some time. I'd love some suggestions/thoughts on places to stay, things to do, what to pack, etc.

Probably do a 7 day trip but could extend it to 10 days as well.

We'll be traveling out of Chicago.

We're in our early 50's, very active and in good shape.

We'd like either a VRBO condo or resort room with an oceanview, close to restaurants, shopping and the beach.

We really just want to have a great time and enjoy all that Maui has to offer.

Thanks in advance for your replies,

Tim

Tim, the Sheraton at Kanapali has rooms on a cliff with a 270 degree ocean view or rooms right near the sand. There are shopping, restaurants, and bars within easy walking distance. There is a great luau a 10 minute drive away. You may even be able to VRBO a condo among the hotels because there are a couple of condo complexes as well.

We were there in the summer. But, winter and the rain bring all the beautiful waterfalls and pools to swim in. My nutty brother-in-law jumps off the cliffs into the various pools. Not my idea of fun.

Well we booked our trip!

11 days and 10 nights staying in an oceanfront VRBO in Ka'anapali Beach.

We've got some good friends that are very familiar with Maui and have given us some excellent tips and insight.

As always, any suggestions or tips from you all would be greatly appreciated as well.

Tim

If you haven't seen one Maui has red sand beaches that are pretty rare
