Default Ergo 122 question

I recently bought a Rogue ST100 tube power amp to run these and on the amp I have a 4 or 8 ohm loading option and on the speaker it says 4/8 ohms. When I demoed the amp I thought it sounded a little better using the 4 ohm binding posts, so that's how I left it.

I have wondered is that correct, is the speaker 4 ohm under normal use and 8 ohm if by-amped? My understanding if you connect 2 8 ohm speakers parallel you create a 4 ohm load and that makes since as to why and how I should connect them to the amp.

Also I have had these for almost 20 years and at the time I got the shielded option because of a tube TV concern a 35inch set. How does shielding change the sound?

Canton speakers have limited distribution and exposure in the US and I suspect that's the reason for a lack of responses. You are correct in that connecting two 8 ohm speakers in parallel results in a 4 ohm impedance. Some manufacturers provide both a nominal and minimum impedance, but 4/8 ohms doesn't make sense for that so I'm not sure what it actually indicates. You're fine doing what you did, and trying both taps and using the one that you find sounds best. Selection of the "proper" tap will optimize current delivery via the output transformers, but what sounds best to you is the most important factor in my opinion and either will work fine. Shielded drivers typically have an additional magnet of the opposite polarity aligned with the driver's magnet to offset the resulting external magnetic field. Shielded drivers aren't designed to sound different, but rather to prevent the speaker's magnetic field from interfering with other nearby devices like a conventional CRT TV. Hope this helps!

The Nominal impedance for cantons are 4 or 8.

Thanks guys I thought I was thinking correctly. So a shielded speaker will sound the same as a nonshielded speaker.
