Of course if the Melco does what it is supposed to do, I really shouldn’t be able to get the same results from my beastly PC...and I am certainly not. My suspicion is that the headphones would benefit tremendously from a better source. I might burn in for another week just in case.
Just out of curiosity, have you tried other headphones also ? In my experience the grado's provide a lot of energy in the high frequencies

Blackstone, you are correct in thinking a better source will result in better sound from the QX-5. Read the first post at the following URL and follow the links.

Yeah someone I know is trying to find an affordable source for use with QX-5 and is undecided on whether he needs the USB module or the network module on the QX-5. I myself use only USB.

simple device that works well is the Uptone regen or the Totaldac USB cable (think a new one has come out not long ago)

Another great usb device is Steve Nugent's USB add on that cuts the 5v connection. Similar to what the TotalDac cable does. I have heard all the connections on my QX5 and for me, ethernet is going to win out. Have to use the USB for now as current server was optimized for this connection. The balanced connection is outstanding if you have that output on server. I heavily isolate my digital gear from electronic to the connection to DAC. Makes a world of difference regardless of what connection you use. So far Audioquest is the most neutral and lowest noise floor cable I've used (Diamond series). I like the Wireworld optical best though.

I'm running Roon core on my iMac and plan to run the Roon app on my iPad. The iMac is upstairs, the QX-5 downstairs and receives files via ethernet. Would an Aurunder or Melco have any role in this setup? I'm confused about what role each component might play.

The Aurunder and Melco have no role in this setup. With the QX-5 in Roon bridge mode you stream directly to it from the iMac and control that from your iPad.

Thanks, Dr. Tone, one less thing to worry about.

My QX-5 is still with Ayre for analog repair, but during the short period I had it installed, files from the iMac sent to the QX-5 via ethernet sounded superb, especially DSD downloads from Acoustic Sounds. I have a Tidal account, but didn't got an opportunity to try it before the QX-5 went silent.

My QX-5 went silent on me last week but I managed to recover by flashing the firmware version from D to G. It must have gone into some mode and flashing the firmware sort of reset it.
