When you are using balanced or Cinch 1 inputs, it is essential that you connect HDMI to HDMI-7 input, not any other, then any interrupted sounds (which is not related to a specific player, rather than a handshaking issue) is resolved.

When switching between HDMI and 2-ch-bypass inputs, I also get a harsh distortet sound through HDMI (many times, but not always!). I first blamed the cable, but it isn't. The effect occurs also with SACDs, that means bitstream player output may not be the reason, because player is set to PCM output here - the SP3 (unfortunately) does not decode DSD. Upon switching off/on the SP3, usually HDMI output works again correctly, until next time...

Given the excellent support of James and Stan, I do hope that a future firmware update may also resolve this problem.

Werner
Thank you. I'm not sure what a Cinch1 input is, or was that a typo?

My issue was with two separate HDMI inputs, plus an optical input, and from two different players. Also got intermittent stuttering on balanced 2 channel analog.

After going through the "secret handshake " menus with Stan B, he felt quite confident there was a hardware problem with my player, possibly shipping damage. The static, or hash, noise was not intermittent. After about an hour or so of normal play, with no events interrupting, the noise would start up, and continue for as long as the player was on.

Hi moonhawk,
you're right, I'm talking only about balanced 1 input which is somehow tied to HDMI 7. Cinch is different, maybe CD input is also tied to HDMI 4, for example, but I'm not sure.
Interestingly, distorted sounds upon switching between HDMI and 2-channel bypass (using bal-1 and HDMI 7) does not occur when player output is set to PCM, only at bitstream (what should be preferred to make use of SP3 DACs).

Generally, adressing the Bryston staff, I would appreciate if you could arrange something like an email alert, or including this info in a Bryston newsletter, when a new firmware is available. Otherwise, the SP3 owners will not regularly benefit from new updates. At least, new firmware should be posted in this forum.

Kind regards and best wishes for a happy new year to all members of this forum!

Werner

Hi Folks,

Harry Pearson's has a new website called HPSoundings.com.

Here is a link below to a review of Bryston's SP3 Surround Sound Processor.

Bryston SP3 Processor/Preamp : HPSoundings

I support this request by Werner.
And with the firmware one should also easily get the release notes.

Please James, do something about it.

As a positive example have a look at how wonderfully Oppo this does!

The Bryston is mainly (99%) an audio component, with HDMI connections.
Is it working (right now) at 99% full capability?

...And I thought that you knew a thing or two about it.

He may have been confused by the open ended nature of your comment. I was.

-- Ah, sorry about that.

* You're right though; on the Internet it is very important to be very clear.
I'll try to improve myself for the very best in this coming new year.

Happy New One Dave, James, Randy, Werner, & Ivan!
