Synology’s new DS420+ NAS

I just upgraded my Synology NAS from the DS412+ to the just-released DS420+. The 412+ was still running well, but I recently added some 5mp surveillance cameras, and between supporting cameras, acting as file server, and of course music storage, with 1g of memory and no SSD cache, things were slowing down a bit. The new 420+ has two slots for SSD cards (so far I’ve added 1 x 480 card) and a memory card slot to upgrade total ram to 6G (which I did). With a 2-core 2.0 GHz processor, 6G of memory, and 480G SSD cache, this thing is probably more horsepower than I need, but it handles everything with no delays or slowdowns. If you’re in the market for a NAS, this is a great one for home use.

That is an impressive machine. I am thinking of moving up the Synology line as well - mainly to run Roon core on the server. This is increasingly a good option. Many good discussions on the Roon community if you are a user.

Tony’s post made me take a quick look at updating my Synology NAS as well as wondering if the increased processing power could run ROON core.

I’ll have to hunt that down on the ROON community forum.

It’s up and running, it was a piece of cake. I backed up the system configuration on the 412, shut it down, removed the drives, installed them in the same order in the new box and fired it up. Synology has a Migration Assistant app that launches when you start the new NAS, and it automatically restored all the settings from my old box. The whole process took about 20 minutes. Of course, that’s moving from a 4 bay to another 4 bay, both running the current version of the operating system. I think it gets a bit more complicated if you have different numbers of drives, say going from 2 to 4, or one with an older operating system.

According to the Roon site, it meets the requirements if you add some additional memory and install an SSD drive in one of the bays.

“Most QNAP, Synology, and Asustor devices with a 64-bit x86 CPU, like Intel or AMD, and at least 2GB RAM are supported.
We strongly recommend 4GB of RAM and an SSD for the Roon databases. “

The 420+ comes with 2GB of ram, but there’s a slot to add another 2 or 4 GB for a max of 6GB. The Synology 4GB card was $85 on Amazon. There are cheaper generics out there, but Synology says you void the warranty if you use non-Synology memory.

The SSD slots on the 420+ are for cache, not dedicated storage, so you’d want to install an SSD drive in one of the 4 bays for Roon.
