This is the story of one platoon of 18 lightly armed men held off the spearhead of Kampfgruppe Peiper for 8 hours during the Battle of the Bulge on December 16, 1944. The ultimate David versus Goliath story of WWII.

The I&R Platoon of the 99th Infantry Division at Lanzerath December 1944

Actual interviews with the veterans of the I&R Platoon of the 99th.

Shared with a friend who spent 10yr+ in an armored division and he was most appreciative. Said he has enjoyed several of the 'articles'.

My father was in Patton's 3rd Army, he was the loader on a 75mm mobile field gun. It was an open chassis Sherman with the gun in lieu of a turret. Fortunately I have seen one. He also drove ammunition trucks. High risk occupation, he was lucky to survive.

Yes, high risk indeed. Sounds like the M10 with the 76.2mm or 3” main armament. The later M36 tank destroyers were equipped with a 90mm to better match the Tiger II (King Tiger) armor and firepower in battle. Fortunately the Germans had built very few of the King Tigers towards the end of the war.

In typical German high quality and over design and over engineer everything fashion, they only built some 450 units. Each Tiger II produced needed 300,000 man hours to manufacture and cost over 800,000 Reichsmark or US$300,000 equivalent to $4,400,000 in 2019. A Sherman cost $65,000 and a Soviet T34 less than half of the Sherman.

Never ceases to amaze me what both sides of the war devised; engineering as well as manufacturing.

Really wasn't all that long ago when you think about it. Although it sure seems like it was. We have obviously come a long way since then but all those weapons were quite enough to extinguish 20 Million lives in WWI and 80 Million in WWII. Don't want to even think about the devastation a WWIII would bring. Let's hope THAT never happens.

If I remember correctly the King Tiger was so big it could not cross many bridges in Europe.
