Thanks redm, I see you use the Rel strata III with your 802d's, I have that sub in my home theater and think it's wonderful. That would also be a possibility for me with the 802's

The Strata III works very well with the 802's. I recommend you have two of the same model though or its hard to blend them and get equal room pressurization. Positioning will also make a big difference depending on your room.

Yes, that would be the plan, I notice you use two different subs, does that create any problems with equalization?

It does so I only use the at very low volume levels and for the lowest freq. Even then I can feel it slightly. I wouldn't recommend mixing.

I honestly don't think you need a sub with either for most music. But you could always hook one up and have crossed at the lowest registers and just have the lowest settings on the sub - more for anchoring the bottom octaves only.

Yes, that's what I'm thinking, and hoping as I really am trying to avoid subs in this setup. I don't find the 802's to be lacking in bass and although I have not heard the 800's yet, I would expect them to be excellent as well.

I used B&W 800 series for over 10 years. From the original N800 to the latest 800 Diamond, I have seen how the speaker changed during the time. I paired them with a pair of Velodyne DD12 subwoofers.
The bass of B&W is deep and tonal but it is not tight enough for some people. Adding subwoofers only increase the volume and the depth of the bass, the tightness is not enhanced. I would suggest you go for 800 Diamond and drive them with powerful solid state amp with fast and bright sound. The combo should give a balanced sound. |
