Schubert - Intégrale des trios avec piano / Complete piano trios
The Gryphon Trio
via Tidal

Streaming this via Tidal, because Qobuz is playing elsewhere in the house (I'm cooking).
Consistent good playing and sound.

The Canadian Gryphon Trio's two-disc set of Schubert's complete music for piano trio features heartfelt performances played with energy and enthusiasm. The Andante con moto from the E flat Trio and the Notturno in E flat major are beautifully sung here with the long legato lines of violinist Annalee Patipatanakoon and cellist Roman Borys flowing over the poised and alert support of pianist Jamie Parker. The strong rhythms and vigorous tempos the players bring to the outer movements of both trios, particularly the Allegro vivace -- Presto that closes the B flat Trio, are particularly successful. Finally, the cogency of the Gryphon Trio's ensemble makes a persuasive case for the enormous length of both works. In sum, if you've never heard any of these standard repertoire works before, the Gryphon Trio's recordings will certainly satisfy. If you've heard some of the classic recordings of the past -- and the Beaux Arts Trio's elegantly lyrical first recording tops the short list -- the Gryphon Trio's recording will perhaps seem less compelling. Recorded in Église St. Benoit de Mirabel in 2006, Analekta's digital sound is clear and direct, but a bit distant.

Default What Classical Music Are You Listening To Tonight?

Mendelssohn: Complete Organ Sonatas
William Whitehead on the organ of the ballroom, Buckingham Palace
Chandos (2009), via Qobuz

Excellent sound and performance. Plenty of dynamic range for those big moments.

Excellent 3 LP set - Harnoncourt considered these to be one work in three sections. A long but worthy listen!

I don't know how this stayed under my radar in February, when is was released.
Bezuidenhout plays these wonderful sonatas in a very subtle way, really delicious to hear.
I know not everybody loves the fortepiano, but give this at least a try... (John ).

This is playing into my practice.
It's making me happy.
