Audio Research CD-5
I currently own a Cambridge Audio 840c cdp and I’ve been reading reviews on the CD-5. I want to upgrade my source to play my collection of redbook cd’s. I’ve also been looking at the Sony SCD XA5400es which also plays SACD’s
Has anyone heard the AR with either of the other two? I would great appreciate a few words of comparison and opinion. The local dealer and I don’t see eye to eye and therefore must rely on the kindness of others. |

Although I haven't heard it, ARC makes some awesome gear. Enough so, that I am in process of securing the line.

I currently use a Sony XA9000ES as my SACD source/CD transport that feeds my ARC DAC7. It is my understanding that the DAC7 has the same digital side as the CD-5. I have a substantial SACD collection, so I prefer having the option. I have a mixed opinion regarding the the two units and I like being able to compare both. The DAC7 (and I would suspect the CD-5) has a more organic quality that tends to sound better with jazz/classical/"audiophile" stuff. The upsampling on the Sony tends to make poorer mastered recordings sound better (most rock, some jazz, etc.). The SACD section of the Sony still sounds better than the CD layer of ALL hybrid SACDs through the DAC7. Hi-Res files on my computer played through the DAC7 compared to SACD on the Sony is a whole 'nother horse race...
My recommendation (even if you don't do computer audio - it's coming around the corner) is to pick up the Sony new to get the great ES warranty, and then pick up a used/demo DAC7, or even better, a new DAC8. All of the options (CD-5, DAC7, Sony ES SACD players) fight well above their weight class value wise and you won't go wrong. |

À question regarding burn-in time on the cd5.
Do the amplifier have to turned on aswell, or can i just put the cd on repeat? |

Have anyone had problems with the cd5 not wanting to play certain cd's?
The one I have on demo won't play Stockfish - closer to the music vol.1. It plays all the other stockfish cd's I have, and it (vol.1) worked on my old cd-player. Any thoughts? Bad disc/copy? Something wrong with the cd5? |
