I am seriously considering the S3 as my next speakers. I also read the review, and I thought it was quite excellent, but I may be biased, so I am wondering, what was it that you found “not intriguing”?

I would caution about drawing any conclusions regarding the sound of Magico speakers based on audio shows. Or even dealers.

I have read a ton of the reviews. Most of them have been positive. The source equipment matters with any revealing speaker. If I were changing ( which I am not) I would certainly give the S-3 and S-5 a listen. I suspect set up and system synergy are more important than choice. Having said that everyone prefers something a little different and the choices are endless.
It's impossible to listen to every combination so I use the reviews to narrow it down. I also listen to dealers I trust.

Agree. Also reading from actual users, especially those whose preferences you have some knowledge of, would be most helpful.

Marsalis.......Let me make it perfectly clear from the beginning, I don't dislike Magico speakers as a few Magico fans have incorrectly assumed. To answer your question, what I find uninspiring about the Magico S3 is its looks, and the same for the S5. To my eyes they look Plain Jane with their flat fronts whether finished in the cheaper M-Cast or the more expensive M-Coat finish. The curved front baffles on the Q series are far more attractive. I have not heard the S3 yet so I cannot comment on its sound but the pundits are praising the S3's performance so I imagine Alon Wolf has created yet another fine sounding speaker. If you can get past its looks, it seems the new S3 is a serious performer at a decent price point. These might be the perfect speakers to listen to in the dark.

I have seen (and heard) the S1. Visually I like the dual tone appearance of the S5 better, although I suspect that the monocoque enclosure may be more desirable technically.
Sonically, I would rather get a V3 (which I heard at shop environment) than the S1. To me the lesser low end support cannot be fully compensated by the increased transparency. The S3 is truly full range and very attractive to many audiophiles (including me) with moderate sized listening room. |

I actually like the look. The simplicity is rather comforting, and the build quality is far beyond anything at even twice the price.
