Can we break-in new cable this way ?
Hi,
In case I want to break-in cable that connect from FM to preamp. Can I just turn on only the FM and keep pre amp off ? Will cable see the same loading between preamp switched On and Off ? Thanks Toga |

Thanks Glisse,Ok, then I will leave source on and preamp off for a week. I will play Ayre Burn-In track repeatedly. I replaced my 7 meters long of Kimber Kable PBJ with Hero of the same length.
But rather disappointed as Hero sounds smoother but much less bass impact and much muddy and slower sounding overall. So I just pray that it will be better with some hours of break-in. But I don't remember PBJ sound this way even when it was new. Toga |

Toga, I thought you were using your tuner? Not sure I would want to run my CD player for a week non-stop.
I don't use Kimber interconnects, so can't really comment on practical experience. But at 7 metres length, I hope you are using balanced cables. My perception is that Kimber does not shield their cables, and it will be very easy for your long runs to be affected by the environment. Hero does have almost 40% more capacitance than PBJ, whether that is enough to affect the sound (your description of the sound is what you would get with capacitive roll-off), I don't know. But the difference over 7 metres could be significant. I would ask Kimber for their advice if it does not improve with break-in. Make sure you don't have a power cable near the Hero either. Good luck. |

Ok, it like this, it happen that at midnight all FM station gone quiet. So plan changed.
I rip burn in track into memory stick and play back from memory stick with Oppo BD player. So no wear and tear on optical drive. Hero is XLR terminated and don't have noise pick up problem. I 'm aware of greater C too and I might have made a wrong move here. There was also a power line run along this Hero too, but power cable is well shield. So no noise pick up problem I guess. Oh, when terminated with XLR, Hero has less of pararell capacitance than PBJ in XLR. http://www.kimber.com/products/inter...ts/analog/pbj/ http://www.kimber.com/products/inter...nalog/hero/cu/ If after long break in and Hero still produce less impactful bass that PBJ, then I have to go back to PBJ. Ok, Hero is out of hibernation now.
after continuous break-in with FM and Ayre Burn-in track for 72 hours, the new Hero left PBJ way behind. Everything has been improved over PBJ by now. So breaking-in process stopped and I will let it continue its breaking-in by normal use. Thanks Glisse. |

The long answer is... most modern preamp use relays to switch between sources. Once the preamp is turned off the relays are at a disconnected state. If that's the case there will be no load presented by your preamp to the FM tuner. Basically your cables will not be connected to anything. Older preamp with mechanical input switching are OK but make sure you select the tuner input on the preamp in order for the preamp to present a load to the tuner input. Hope this makes sense to you. |

ronenash, I agreed. Thanks. I think the proper way is to connect cable from preamp to poweramp, but with poweramp switched off. I heard relay clicking when I switched source on pre amp, so when turned off, it will be open-circuit.

from Casdas FAQ, only the source needed to play signal, open circuit at the other end or not doesn't matter. It need just voltage to burn in the dielectric I guess. current flow in copper doesn't do anything.
