Hi Mark and other guys, just got back from the beach last night.....need to do a quick writeup on my visit to Greenville's "Acoustic Sounds" location. I'll explain in a minute.
Mark lives about an hour and a half from me so it's an easy trip up I-85. I've never really heard a pair of Legacy loudspeakers outside of a hotel room, so I was looking forward to this. As everyone here knows, the system is insanely visually impressive. You've seen the pictures. The Valors are finished exquisitely and I personally have always loved the look of Legacys. They are big....you need some room. I realize that the wavelet will make them work in probably any room, but giving them space to breathe most likely pays huge dividends. One think about Mark's system is IMO the speakers are "matched" to the size of the room almost perfectly. He's got plenty of space to the sides and rear and does have room to pull them out even more if he wished. Everyone has seen the Elrod power cables and interconnects which are visually impressive too. Well, they are much more impressive in person. For cables, they are physically HUGE. You'd need a lot of space behind your equipment to even fit them in your system. Anyone with a cabinet or rack would have to come up with something to even fit them in the system! We spent some time going through the Wavelet setting and menu on his laptop, it's really cool, all the different settings make it easy to tailor the system in case of any room anomalies or preferences. I didn't spend too much time fiddling with the settings since I didn't want to mess up what Mark had going already. One thing I was surprised about was how good it sounded with the Wavelet DEFEATED. I expected it to get quite a git messier but really it sounded damn good even with the Wavelet room correction bypassed. So.....how did it sound? Excellent of course. The speakers disappeared regardless of their size which is impressive. You pretty much had a wall of sound from wall to wall. The highs were pristine which I imagine was due to the Legacy AMT tweeters. I will say the BASS response was probably the best I've ever heard without an insane wall of subwoofers. I know the Valors have powered subs in them, but as stand alone towers without "external" subs, easily the best I've ever heard. There were several recordings we played with organ etc. that literally shook the foundation of the home. Awesome. The second thing I probably would rank as the best I've heard was the sound quality at extremely low volumes. He played a couple of songs to demonstrate this and it was pretty cool how you lost no dynamics even at very low volumes. The third thing that stood out to me was how it presented music as live or realistic as opposed to hyper detailed, audiophile imaging. I personally have always gravitated toward loudspeakers that presented music as a whole rather than check all the audiophile boxes and IMO the Legacys are in that category. I've heard speakers that outline images better or may have slightly more hard detail, but the Legacys present the music as a whole, as if you're listening to your own private concert, not an audiophile demo disc. Hard to describe in words but you may get what I mean. Now......the music collection...........

Ok, here's the deal. Mark doesn't have an analog front end so no vinyl.....with that disclaimer.....
He has the BEST MUSIC COLLECTION I'VE EVER SEEN. Period. I couldn't believe my eyes. Downstairs he has an L shaped bookcase full of CDs and SACDs which wrap around one wall. Guys, these aren't just CDs he ordered from Best Buy. These are all JVC XRCDs, Telarc SACDs, Esoteric SACD box sets, Berlin Philharmonic box sets, The Absolute Sound SACDs, K2 discs, LIM mastered discs, Japanese SHM CDs and SACDs......I could go on for an hour. He has original master discs/plates that he had to sign a legal agreement that he wouldn't use them to distribute since they are the originals used for plating. Upstairs there is an extra bedroom with bookcases along 3 of the 4 walls. Here you'll find rock, pop, jazz.....hell, he's even got sections for guitar, bass, percussion, you name it. Again, he doesn't have the normal David Bowie CDs.....no. He has the collectible Japanese 7 inch discs all as a set. Stuff I've never seen before or knew existed. How about the Japanese Mobile Fidelity Gold disc set of Pink Floyd's The Wall ? It's there. STILL IN THE DAMN LONGBOX!!!! Unreal. But wait, there's more........ There's a third bedroom with huge carton boxes of all his classical music he hasn't unpacked yet......did he buy them at Barnes and Noble??? Not this guy. There are TONS of Esoteric SACDs, Telarc SACDs, Pentatone SACDs, rare opera box sets, you name it. He basically owns Acoustic Sounds minus the vinyl. Incredible. I'm going to let him post pics of his music collection, he asked me to wait until everything is unpacked and arranged so you can see the full scale of the music collection. Look, here's the thing. Mark has an amazing system no doubt. The reason I was so impressed with the music collection is this.....think about it. Anyone with the financial means can just order a pair of Legacys (or your favorite speaker), Esoteric equipment and Elrod and Shunyata products. BUT the music collection has taken him YEARS.....dollars and a ton of time to put together. He has of out of print things that you may never find again. It's a carefully put together treasure trove of music that will stand the test of time and honestly may only be duplicated by very few on this PLANET. I'm not kidding. Even my short write up here does not do it justice. Anyway, if anyone if ever in our area, be sure to reach out to us and check it out. - Buck
