Mozart - Requiem - Süssmayr / Dutron 2016 Completion
Rias Kammerchor
Freiburger Barockorchester
, René Jacobs
Qobuz 24/96

Another Klara Award '17.
First listen, and it seems to be a top performance.

A bit of explanation:

1791: a busy year for Mozart who, when he received a commission for a Requiem, was already working on Die Zauberflöte and had a deadline to deliver La clemenza di Tito. Everyone knows what happened next: the commission postponed, exhaustion and death, a work left unfinished and which, after several composers were approached, was finally completed by Süssmayr. This version gradually became established as the closest to Mozart’s intentions, but is not free of faulty part-writing and orchestration. In 2016 a young French composer, Pierre-Henri Dutron, persuaded René Jacobs to perform his own revision of the Requiem completed by Süssmayr. This new version was created with great success in a series of five concerts around Europe in November 2016. © harmonia mundi

If you are in the mood for some staggeringly virtuosic piano playing, then look no further! The Stravinsky, in particular, defies belief. It derives from Stravinsky's own piano duet version, and it's hard to believe at times that only one pianist is playing. Very close and clear sound.

Default What Classical Music Are You Listening To Tonight?

Adams: Naive And Sentimental Music
Los Angeles Symphony, Esa-Pekka Salonen conducting
Nonesuch (2009)

Wonderful performance and excellent sound. This is attention-holding music: long slow building of tension, gripping moments of swirling then clashing strings, and every once in a while a brief, almost lyrical, respite which then quickly resolves to tension-building again. The finale of the 1st movement reminds me a bit of the crescendo at the end of the Beatles’ “A Day In The Life.” Fun.

Piazzolla: Tangazo
Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, Charles Dutoit conducting
Decca (2001), from the box set Decca Sound: Dutoit Montréal

Another fine recording from this box set that Carlos was also mining recently.

Default Corelli: Chamber Sonatas

Wrapping up the day with...

Corelli:
Sonate da camera a tre, Op. 2 (complete)
Sonate da camera a tre, Op. 4 (complete)
The Avison Ensemble: Pavlo Beznosiuk (violin), Caroline Balding (violin), Richard Tunnicliffe (cello), Paula Chateauneuf (archlute), Roger Hamilton (harpsichord)

I know this recording is old hat in this thread, but I just really enjoy listening to it because the music and performance are superb. The recorded sound at low levels (everyone is sleeping here) is very satisfying.

Nice record. Great performance. Hard to believe it was recorded back in 1959.

It’s never old hat to play a great recording like this.

I have to say that I am pleasantly surprised by this recording: I wasn't sure Perahia was the man for the "Hammerklavier." He does, however, play it with considerable power, and of course, beauty. Wonderfully resonant sound (96k/24bit FLAC).
