Steve Guttenburg couldn’t make up his mind about his own personal speakers. He kept raving about the Sonus Faber evos and then Amati futura staying that was his end game, then all of a sudden he moves to a totally different sound the Focal Sopra 2.

Ever since then I take his comments with a huge grain of salt.

With stand-mounts, room size and positioning is everything, so reviewers comments become very conditional.

If you need more bass you can always add a sub, but part of the attraction with most stand-mounts stems from the fact that they're a 2-way design, so there's usually a level of coherence and precision of soundstage imaging that's difficult for any 3 or 4-way to match.

I haven't heard the Elac's as yet so that's something I must do.

The Elac and the 700 are quite different, with the Elac being a 3-way.

I had the original B&W 703 that I purchased in college to replace my dad's old DM330i that I borrowed and never returned. He got the 804S not long after that. We were always a B&W family. I still have my 703 in the basement waiting to go to my office system. Anyway, I purchased my Focal Aria before I saw a new 700 Series was coming out. So, of course when they did I had to have a listen. I was honestly shocked at how different and not B&W they sounded to my ears. So polite, so relaxed. I wasn't really disappointed but I was expecting not what I heard.

There was a progression from the CDM NT to 700 to CM. You could listen and know 'yea that's a B&W'. 700 Series 2 seems to a broken that progression at least to my ears.

If you don’t like the new 700s you probably won’t like the 800 D3 series either.

To me the new series including the 800 series sound better

The good news is if you like the old BW sound you can purchase the just replaced CM or 800d2 series

It's not that they weren't liked. I was just in awe over the voicing change.

Still great stuff and top notch build quality. Just worries me with all these great brands seeing minor to radical changes.

I'm an 800-series speaker owner, and auditioned the 705's last week while in a high end store. I was extremely impressed all around. What a great value.

I take any review from anyone with a grain of salt...
