Most power tubes drift over time, and you do need to monitor/adjust the bias on a fixed bias circuit to get the best performance and life from your tubes.

Self biasing circuits, no problem - just let 'em run!

Self biasing (except for tube gain) has nothing to do with the tubes themselves. Self, fixed, or auto biasing are all determined by circuit design. A tube tester is useless in this regard, it only detects a good or bad tube, it won't set or read bias of your amp.
