My first foray into high end audio included my first Krell piece, a wonderful KAV-300r. It is fantastic and will not be replaced until I can afford the McIntosh 6600 integrated with the tuner update. My wife requires a receiver...no separates allowed.

I have recently acquired a KAV-300iL for the larger of my two UK systems. I am playing it into a pair of Acoustic Transducer Company (ATC) SCM-19 stand mount speakers plus the matching powered C1 sub woofer. I did not like the combo at all to begin with but then found after changing the speaker cables to River Cables Starflex from the much lighter Chord Carnival I was using, the system was much more listenable to. ATC also replaced the amplifier on the sub with a much improved model, free of charge.

It is still at the far precise end of the precise to refined spectrum and as my other system in the UK and both the systems in France are very much at the refined end, using Meridian, Fidele-Quad and Musical Fidelity amplifiers, my ears took quite a bit of retraining. I also think that although I bought the SCM-19's and the C1 ex-demo, all three speakers were only part of the way through their break in period. I am told the break in for the ATC speakers is over 200 hours, with improvements continuing up to 500 hours.

One question - I bought my Krell from a Japanese man who was retiring and giving up his London apartment. It was originally a 100 volt/50Hz model and he was running off a transformer (only 350va !!!). I opened it up and changed the dip switches from 1,1,1 (100v) to 2,2,2 (240v). The mains fuse is currently still 8A. Is 4A the correct value for 240V and should it be fast or slow blow? The mains transformer is 750va, so 4 amps would seem to make sense.

Wilson

Default Have Several Krell Items and Love them

In my office in the house I have a 300r receiver. Great sound and super FM.
Other source for that system is a Krell Kid and a Arcam CD, feeding a pair of DynaAudio x12's.

In my den I have a Krell 300 cd player for HDCD and a Krell 400i for audio feed from my TV.

Super equipment.

By the way the main units in the den are McIntosh Pre and Amp and SACD player.

In the photo below the Krell CD in the armoire, was later replaced by the McIntosh 201 sacd player.

I have a Krell KAV-1500 that I power my 5 home theatre speakers with. The subs are on other amps. Also have a Krell HTS 7.1 pre-proc, but looking to sell that piece and move to something else.
