Finishing touches put on Office Crown system
Good evening friends,
As many of you know, since spring of this year I've been in the process of upgrading my office Crown system, which had been based on the classic IC150A/DC300A combo to the Distinction series components; starting with the SA-2 amplifier and EQ-2 equalizer, then having located a DL-2 preamplifier to complete the electronics. Since the Distinction series became too much for the original rack I had built over 10 years ago, I recently built a new rack, which I chronicled the construction of here: http://www.audioaficionado.org/vinta...es-system.html I designed the rack to accommodate the complete system, with ample room to also accommodate the accessory walnut cabinets once offered by Crown for the components. I had procured an original cabinet for the SA-2 amplifier, but to truly complete the system's visual presentation I needed three more walnut cases for the DL-2 Controller, its power module, and also for the EQ-2 equalizer. I saw this being a challenge as these cabinets can be hard to find in good condition, and if they can be found, the prices can be rather steep. I was bracing myself for a long wait-that is, until I was lucky enough to hook up with a fellow Crown aficionado who has taken up building exact reproductions of the original Crown cabinets. I've seen other attempts to reproduce these cabinets, but these attempts paled compared to these. You may recall me mentioning this in my rack construction thread, when I purchased my first cabinet from him, for the DL-2 power module. So I had the gentleman construct me two more cabinets to complete the system's cabinetry. Those cabinets are now installed, and I am most pleased with the results:          As it turns out, the gentleman who constructed these cabinets for me is an AA member; Rodney aka rlsakw had been a lurker here for some time but I convinced him tonight to become a subscriber. So if any of you Crown fans would like a beautiful walnut case for your vintage Crown component, PM Rodney for details. I can assure you that Rod will do a superb job, and if you have any issues whatsoever he will make it right for you. He comes highly recommended and I was most fortunate to hook up with him and complete my system's cosmetic agenda. I've been busy on other aspects recently as well....last weekend I upgraded the speaker cabling using WireWorld Solstice speaker cables ordered from Ivan...and I am very pleased with the improvements I'm hearing right out of the chute-increased air, and a notable mid-bass improvement. I expect further improvements over time. Some of you may also notice I have removed my McIntosh MR78 Tuner from this system-I have returned that tuner to the living room system, and moved my MR80 tuner into this office system. Last weekend I also re-capped this tuner to resolve a broadband hum issue. A total of 16 capacitors were replaced, the hum is gone and a drifting issue has also disappeared with the stabilization of the power supply. I am most pleased with this system's progress, both visually and sonically. Thank you Ivan, Rodney and thanks to all my friends here for showing interest in this project.  Pete
