IMO, for travel use, I really like the new Sony MDR-EX1000 (IEM). The sound is like wearing big headphones. Check out my unboxing and my collection on YouTube.

These IEM does not need an amp to sound great. The soundstage is beyond your head. I don't know how they do it.

The thing about big headphones is you need an amp to get the best out of them. Who wants to lug around an amp with their iPhone or iPad?! I've tried many different IEM, none sound as good as these Top of the Line Sony. They come close or at times at good as my $999 Denon headphones, D7000.

The AKG K 702s get very good reviews, comfortable, very well for an iPod, yet may be to bulky for travel.
