Default 3 Reasons Electric Cars Are Rad—and 3 Ways They Still Suck

One negative with some EVs:

"Aside from the electric drivetrain, what you're getting isn't often substantially different from the gasoline-powered version of the same vehicle; using the Kona and Niro as examples again, the gas-powered equivalents are typically priced from about $20,000. No, you're not going to make the $10,000 difference back in gas savings before you replace it with a new one; according to the EPA, the difference in cost to run the gasoline Kona versus the Kona Electric is about $700 per year, depending on the type of gasoline-powered Kona you're comparing to. That means you'd have to drive the Kona Electric for nearly 15 years before you'd be ahead of the game."

Did I mention that Samsung are developing a graphene infused car battery which they say will give a 10 min charge time and a 250K mile lifespan.

My $55,000 electric car only costs me $281.83 a month and haven't been to a gas station in 4 years and zero service costs.

The long charging time is a moot point since most people will charge their car in their garage...........unless you drive more than 200+ miles in a day.

$7,500 tax credit
$0 sales tax in NJ
Reduced pricing by some manufacturers to get in the electric market

Now is the time to get your feet wet with electric.

How much would the non EV version (or comparable) would cost? It’s likely to be significantly less than $55k, no?

Not in my case........since I lease all my cars. I'm concerned about monthly payments, and I would never be able to get a new $55,000 gas car for under $300/month.

I'm getting an electric bike for my birthday soon, I'm sick and tired of ploughing through rain sodden 40-50mph headwinds all year. 2020, the year of constant wind.

The case for electric cars is getting better. Younger folks at my little company are already making the switch and no regrets. Range in some models is approaching 400 miles - a tank of gas.

My wife and I are fans of the performance versions of the BMW 3-series.
Tried a Tesla in 'ludicrous' mode.
Holy Moly.

So, keeping our current cars on the road for perhaps 2-3 years more - hopefully our last gas vehicles.

As the saying goes — "Once you go electric you'll never go back."

Georges, I don't know how it is in England now, but here in Belgium, the tax reduction and other advantages are quite impressive.
I'm driving my last gas vehicle for sure.
Next will be a plug-in hybrid, followed by an electric... or hydrogen?
