When do Maggies stop being Maggies?
Here is my question: Can Magnapan MG IIIa's be modified past being Maggies?
Here is my list of modifications: 1. Tossed the original MDF Frames and replaced them with Maple Hardwood. 2. Removed the passive crossovers. 3. Actively tri-amped them with lots of juice, aprox. 900 WRMS per speaker. 4. added dual Subwoofers (NHT W2) with a dedicated Sub crossover. (NHTX1) 5 built custom rigid stands to reduce vibration. After these changes, they now have huge amounts of dynamic range and can handle any kind of music I throw at them. Kick a** never entered into Maggie speaker discussions, but these are amazing!! They still retain the lower level Maggie signature, although a lot fuller sounding. That still makes them Maggies in my mind, but they are now so much more. Your thoughts? Regards, Jim

I have a pair of them in my home theater and they are the weakest link in my system, don't spend too much money on them as they are 25 year old speakers. While the MGIII's sound very good, many of the newer speakers sound better at louder volumes. I am augmenting mine with a pair JL audio F112 subs. Go demo a pair of sonus faber speakers.

IMO, it depends who you ask, and I wouldn't worry what others think or say when it comes to such a thing.

Try recabling the interiors with quality cables. You may want to listen to a pair with someone who has Mye Stands and see how yours add up.

Jim...as to your question, as long as you are enjoying the heck out of them, I would not worry too much about whether they are still Maggies or not. Sounds like they are "Super Maggies" with the same resolution, see through midrange, and coherence/seamlessness, but with added dynamic punch and deeper bass. Sounds like you are having a ball. |

Jim.......I think you have raised them to a level that they can now be refered to as Margaret's.
