Upon closer examination the tray is sitting low in the slot and does appear to scrape the bottom of the slot as it moves in and out. If the tray is supposed to be dead center in the slot, it isn't. McIntosh considers that the tray may have shifted during shipping. When I got home I found the box sitting on its side, as delivered by UPS. I don't know if that's a factor or not.

Sharon Butt says they'll get back to me. It'd be nice if she says no worry, just send it back to them if further issues develop.

If that were my 301, I'd just pop the top and adjust the tray myself. If its anything like older Mac players, there should be spring loaded adjustment screws easily accessible on the transport that vertically align the tray within the opening of the faceplate.
The tray scraping on the bottom of the opening would bug me too, and should be easy to adjust yourself.

Ivan.......That's exactly what I would do. I am sure it is an easy adjustment.

If the transport is indeed like the previous Mac players and there are readily available screws to adjust, then making an adjustment myself makes sense. Perhaps this weekend I'll at least take the top off and have a look, especially if Ms. Butt or someone else at McIntosh doesn't get back to me by then. It sounds as if I'd need only to loosen these screws a bit, then put the top back on. Even one as clumsy as I should be able to do that.

Besides, from what I've read on AA and my C2300 experience, Mac has a history of over-tightening screws so I wouldn't be surprised if the 301 fix is as simple as loosening screws. Now, if the chassis screws are over-tight . . .

I received a reply from John Messemer of McIntosh, who thinks the 301 was jostled during transit also. Attached to the e-mail are instructions on how to open the unit and adjust the screws on either side of the CD tray. I'm planning to attempt it this weekend.
