What Lawn Tractor Are You Riding?
My 1989 John Deere Hydro 175 is just like a Timex. Takes a licking and keeps on ticking. Makes quick work of our 1 acre of grass and hauls the 2-wheel trailer full of whatever around with aplomb. Am guessing the same level of quality in a new JD would be well over $3K. Change the oil & filter every year and the belts every second year and keep it reasonably clean and it keeps on keeping on. Can't decide if it is worth the $100 to replace the seat (has a split). Not this year.

When I was a teenager, we had a Gravely. I mowed the lawn twice a week and it was the envy of the neighborhood.
Now I have no time so I have a gardener, crabgrass and clover. OK, just a little crabgrass and clover. He's really pretty good. Last edited by GaryProtein; 07-03-2015 at 04:12 PM. |

Glenn.......This past March I purchased a Gravely ZT 52 HD mower. It is a serious grass cutting machine. I just mowed with it yesterday. It cut my mowing time in half and does a beautiful job. The Gravely ZT 52 HD is most likely the last mower I will ever need to buy. Love it.

Not sure there was such a machine as the zero-turn mower when my 1989 JD175 Hydro was made. The zero-turn for anything but professional lawn service is fairly recent. Plus, along with shooting and music/stereo gear, gardening is therapy for me. Am sure one can do so, but pulling the trailer full of mulch/topsoil/compost or snow-blowing, etc., is likely not as convenient with a zero-turn.
The doctor that lived behind us when I was pre-school had a Gravely with all the attachments. Reel mower, cycle-bar mower, rotary mower, roto-tiller, etc. He had the "trailer" that allowed him to stand on it behind and steer without having to walk. Remember how fascinated I was by his Gravely when I was 4-5 years old. He would occasionally allow me to stand in front of him while he mowed. Here's my JD175.

John Deere X750 27hp with 54" mower deck, covers 2 acres of lawn and paths around a 2 acre field in a couple of hours. Also have a pull-behind brush cutter and 48" snow thrower to go with it. In truth I'm rarely on it, since I travel allot my wife usually takes care of the mowing.

Glenn, I've been a Wheel Horse guy most of my life but two years ago I went the 'zero turn' route and I can tell you (as Dan will) there's no looking back. Cut my lawn care time from 1'35" down to less than an hour !
I have a Kubota, the important considerations in selection are…….fab steel deck and commercial grade hydro motors. FWIW, the #1 brand is eXmark followed by Skag I believe but everybody and their mother makes a zero turn these days. One more thing, the single best $200 investment I made …………a mulching kit for the deck, it's kinda like vegetables…….why did it take so long in life to 'luv em all' !! |
