Default Turntable Mat?

Hi guys,

I have a VPI Prime which has a metal platter and wondered if others with a similar table are using any kind of mat on the platter or just putting the record on the platter directly. Dealer said he prefers direct to metal. If you are using a mat is it stock or an aftermarket mat that provides some improvement? If so which one. Since I have adjustable VTA I know I can try it and see just curious what others have experienced?

Thanks!!

George

I'd say 75-80% of VPI owners do not use a mat. Lately there has been some positive recommendations for the Pro-Ject Leather-it mat over some much more expensive mats.
There are a few threads on the VPI Forum regarding the topic.

I use a "Hide in the Sound" black leather turntable mat I got on Amazon. Actually it is more like a soft black suede. It was around $35. As I remember they make a lot of colors and styles. Excellent sounding mat that really helps with static. Since it is Amazon you can try one and if you don't like it, you can always return it. I really like mine.

What mat is recommended for the VPI Signature? I am currently using the stock VPI felt mat and do not want to adjust the VTA. Suggestions?

I didn't know that most vpi owners used no mat. I'm trying it now.
