Thorens TD124, or Garrard 301/401?
I'm very interested in starting a long-term project to build up a vintage turntable to go with the vibe of my system, decor, and taste. Currently, I am strongly considering a Thorens TD124, or a Garrard 401. I'm also very interested in the 301, but it seems a bit played out and thus overly expensive, and I honestly have no issue at all with the very 'JFK' 401.
Does anyone have any advice on selecting between the Thorens and Garrard? With the TD124 is there a strong preference toward the Mk I or II? Does either version of the TD124 have better engineering, sound quality, or intrinsic value? Also, on the TD124 is it worth it to go with a 12" arm since that requires an extended tonearm board? The 9-10" arms look so clean on the fitted board. Currently, I am considering the SME M2-12R, SME M2-9R, EMT 997, and the EMT 929. I love EMT TSD/JSD so much, but I also want to be able to swap in SPU G type and standard head shells to be able to play around with cartridge types. And of course setting the VTF on the EMT is pretty simple and amazing. Thanks for any advice! Last edited by junker; 01-23-2016 at 07:21 PM. Reason: photo |

junker, From my research both would be excellent choices. The Garrards may have the edge sonically in that the Thoreans TD124 is a part belt-drive, part rim-drive TT, where as the Garrards are pure rim-drive tables. Shindo uses Garrads for example.

Thanks for the input! I'm starting to lean toward finding a nice 401 motor for refurb...

Hi Junker,
Both are EXCELLENT choices. But I would lean towards the Gerrard's, 301's of 401's. When beautifully restored and rebuild, a classic. have seen these rebuilds done by Artisan Fidelity and I must say the 301 Statement really pulled at my heart. Whichever your decision is, its never wrong on either. Cheers!

I have had both, and prefer the Thorens. I love the retro look, and some of its unique features. The clutch assembly which stops the platter to quickly change records, the built-in illuminated stroboscope enables speed check while record is being played, pitch control, built-in level bubble and levelling controls. I have three arms/armboards that are easy to change out. Origin Live Zephyr and EMT TSD15, Ortofon RMG 212 for my SPUs, and a SME 3009 with a Denon 103.

I had the option of getting a 401 or 124 MK2 and went with the 124 because to me it was a better setup for my needs. Its just so very user friendly and runs dead silent because it was restored with love and care. However, from what I understand mine is a bit of a hybrid MK1/MK2 using the best bits from each as well as a tad of after market upgrades. Since I got my TT setup right and added a substantial amount of high quality vinyl to my collection (700 LP's in 3 months) I have kinda stopped listening to digital unless its for background music. My digital setup is no slouch either but I do miss its convenience. Hope this helps and good luck with the selection process. |
